Alternatively, you have to finish the game once before you can get ANY achievments.

This could work, if you get all the items you need while the death march is going on.... However, if you haven't ever talked to Commander Hayes, that would mean the Vindicator would still have the default number of thrusters... and I'm not sure if you could make it everywhere in time.

You could earn achievement the first time through, I think... but you can't see the requirements for the achievements until you beat it once.

Travel to 999.9, 999.9 in Hyperspace
Kill both Tanaka and Katana :(

I would say the easiest way to track achievements would be for the game to keep a tally in the background, but not award any until you finish a playthrough. That way, first timers are not spoiled, though it might be quite annoying to find out you're not awarded an achievement until after you've played through the entire game.

Other achievements:

Less talking, more killing: Eliminate 10 enemy battlegroups without conversing with them first
PTSD: Extract a lander from a planet with only 1 crewman left alive
Conformist: Finish the game without starting the Yehat revolution
Squeezing the *juice*: Make and then break an alliance with the Orz
Mysteroius Murderous Monster: Capture ZEX's beast without having spoken to Admiral ZEX
Just Friends: Avoid having a romantic encounter with Talana
Questionable Ethics: Increase your crew cost to 15 RU
Human Resources Professional: Decrease your crew cost to 1 RU
Seek Death at the Hands of your Enemy: Lose 2 weeks to the Talking Pet

Need to specify 12 crew initially...
Seek Death at the Hands of your Enemy: Lose 2 weeks to the Talking Pet
Amnesia: Lose 4 weeks to the Talking Pet
(does that work, or is it just game over the second time?)

I believe from perusing sa-matra.net that there's multiple post-Dnyarri conversations with the Ur-Quan, during which they get increasingly annoyed at your sauntering around like a huge idiot.

Here are some more:

OCD to the max - Collect ALL minerals from ALL planets

Prank Caller - Call the Melrnome with a caster 10 times without purchasing anything

You killed my brother, prepare to... Never mind - Kill Tanaka, and then befriend Katana

Zelnick approved! - Have all possible Melnorme equipment on the Vindicator

Your my only friend... - Until the Sa-Matra, fight battles with only Fwiffo in your fleet

Inept Warrior - Lose 100 ships in the main game

Death by Cuteness - lose a lander to the Evil Ones

Worse than Zebranky - Ignore the Zoq-Fot-Pik's distress signal

This next bunch would definitely need to be secret until unlocked.

Time Lord - Name your captain "The Doctor" and the Vindicator "TARDIS"

Thats Not Logical Captain - Name your captain "Kirk" and the Vindicator "Enterprise"

Legend of Talana - Name your captain "Link" and the Vindicator "Epona"

Welcome to the Darkside - Name your captain "Darth Vader" and the Vindicator "Death Star"

Wheres the Fuel Gone? - Name your captain "Jack Sparrow" and the Vindicator "Black Pearl"

Fartherscape - Name your captain "John" and the Vindicator "Moya"

Super Fwiffo Bros - Name your captain "Mario" and the Vindicator "Yoshi"

This is Star Control, this Star Control on drugs - have both Star Control II (or Ur-Quan Masters) and Star Control III on the same computer

I wonder whether this is possible within the given time limit even if you do nothing else. I'm not in favor of achievements that require cheating.

I am not a fan of the name achievements, nor of the Star Control 3 one. For one thing, you'd need to scan the entire hard drive to do it reliably, and that's asking for a system permission we really don't need.

I was inspired by Psycho Mantis and the Olimar trophy from Super Smash Bros. Now that I look at it though, I agree that it would be pretty unreliable.

I can also see the flaw in the name achievements, they would be WAAAY too easy to get.

Oh well, back to the drawing board

The flaw is really more that they're infringing on other companies' IPs. Also, why? There are better and more subtle jokes and references to make.
