Not really related to the e-book discussion, but I've seen a few scattered fics on Archive of Our own and on Livejournal in different profiles than the frungy_lovers comm.

There may be some scattered on tumblr, but I'm really not sure.

Thanks Saria, I'll go look there. Btw, I save each source's HTML files (i.e., the actual web page) in separate directories, at first. So I'd e.g. have a directory called lj for the ones sourced from Livejournal.

The reason for this is each web site uses its own HTML, and I'm trying to clean a whole directory's HTML at once (among other reasons).

Sources of SC fan fiction:
1) Fanfiction.net http://www.fanfiction.net/game/Star_Control/ [Downloaded, Validated]
2) SCWC hosted via Star-Control.com http://www.fanfiction.net/game/Star_Control/ [Downloaded, Validated]
3) http://frungylovers.livejournal.com/
4) Star-control.com forum threads:
4.1.) Heavy Space - http://www.star-control.com/community/v ... m.php?f=10
4.2.) Mods, Clones and other Fan Content - http://www.star-control.com/community/viewforum.php?f=9

Any that I'm missing? Also, do people tend to post their fanfic in 4.1. & 4.2., or just 4.1.?

*) TVTropes http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/F ... tarControl (though directs to existing links)

There's some fan fiction in the old forum's *Heavy Space* (http://www.star-control.com/forum/index.php?board=5.0), though some of it has been reposted here.

Another thing I want to sharpen is my understanding of copyright laws and how they apply to digital content. Since SC is a registered trademark, and the Wikipedia page on legal issues with fan fiction is massive, I'll have to come back to you on that.
Hmm, well at least the SCWC has this blurb on the bottom of the main page.
The fiction is copyright of the respective authors.
Material may not be reproduced without permission, but I'm a generous type so ask rather than stealing. Thanks for reading!
Whether that is relevant since the site is gone and wiped and the material has been handed over to PNF I'm not sure, but the spirit is pretty clear. I suppose the same goes for the forum, all authors retain copyright and would need to agree on being included. And of course, I'd like 20 cents a copy for my amazing fiction ;)
I'm basically converting HTML to EPUB. My big challenge at the moment is:
1) ensuring that it's all valid and well-formed XHTML (e.g. no deprecated elements such as <font>, and properly closed tags

2) editing the HTML again to ensure a consistent style (for instance, <h1> for all titles and anchors for the authors whose contact details are still there, etc.

That's my initial work. From there, I need to prepare manifest file, which I'd be happy to describe if needed. Most of this can probably be automated e.g. with Calibre, but I'm doing this hands-on for now.
This sounds fairly interesting. Once you're happy with the system, I'd love to have a description of the process here so that anyone who wants to can compile personal copies of fanfiction.

As for me, anything I write is fine to copy, so long as you:
1) tell me you're doing it
2) attribute me as Death 999
3) attribute TFB as well in an appropriate manner (if it's a compilation of SC material, the reminder that this is SC fanfic doesn't need to be reiterated directly for the work)
4) if you make alterations to the text, you note them somewhere accessible from the text, and include this fact in the 'telling me' part. Formatting doesn't count unless it's editorial reformatting like cutting paragraph breaks. Similarly, splitting '…' into '...' or other such transparent transformations need no mention.
