After two month and a book lost in mail, finally got it today. Awesome!

There's a plot continuity point - Gruber was on the Starbase at the beginning, as Hayes' deputy, but then later there's a flashback that suggests he's from Unzervalt...

Correct - p.192:
"Gruber surfaced and opened the cockpit hatch. He was on
Unzervalt and his village hailed him as a hero. He entered
his house and there he saw his wife, Lily."

It's a kind of flash forward and flash back in the same dream, I suppose - he flashes back to the war in 2155, then forward to "his village" on Unzervalt where he's married to Lily in what must be an alternate future or present...?

Anyway, just finished the second book - both worth a read.
