It will be soon. Just giving people a few days to process the change and move their conversations. Everyone has done well so far. Until this place is locked down  completely, one of us checks it about every second day, so its hardly unmoderated. Registration has been shut down, so we don't have to worry about spambots.

So, I'm guessing we can still post here?  So, what's the motivation to go to the new board?

You can still post here for a very short time, to allow people who don't pop up as often to get their bearings. This place will be locked down very soon though.

From the organizer:

In the end the turn out was rather good, but the amount of actual games played was small. The Australians were on the channel earlier and were playing quite a bit with the Russian(s) and Europeans. As the American continent woke up and the players started wandering to the channel we had 12 players around. Mysteriously the channel seemed to be more interested in talking than playing and the evening ended with around 3 games played. There was no interest for a tournament, so it was skipped. I don't know if it was for this forum thread or something else, but the activity in the arena was very high during this week.

I also just realized him and me used to be almost neighbours. Weird. I guess it's a small SC world.

Well, one of the things going on nowadays is that we try to keep GD threads somewhat on topic. Topic drift is fine in OT but here we'll let a thread sink (especially an old hideous one) and start a new one about recent events ;)

Or if you want to stick to the topic, what were you thinking when you did your art? Was there a time when you felt it was really really good? Or did you just post it to have something to show?

But I have to ask... you more or less shared the sentiment of "If you don't like ASD then get off the forums."

That's a bit disconcerting.  Back when I used to frequent the site, he used to maliciously attack anyone new or someone he deemed unworthy.  I guess my question is: how is this site supposed to grow if new members are chased away?

I think you misunderstand what I said. No small wonder though, since this isn't the most straightforward subject and  I could have been clearer. Lets put it like this. Back when you were active, we didn't have much moderation. For along time we didn't actually have any, making it law of the jungle around here. If you can't deal with someone and there is no one around with the power to stop him, then it is a case of "Deal with it or get off the forums". And more generally, for every person being a dick on a forum, someone else is being nice. If you give someone's opinion more weight than it deserves just because he's being rude, then you should reconsider your options. this is true anywhere you go on the net, not just here. If you take everyone personally, you're going to get a lot of bruises.

The situation here is different nowadays. There's moderation now that ensures that people don't go too far. But what we see as too far and what you do may be two different things. Even though this isn't the jungle any more, it isn't a playground either. The SCDB doesn't do heavy moderation, because we expect our members to be able to take criticism. We're on the lookout for newcomers getting tussled up too badly (I guess Nuclear is a good example) but we're not really in the business of running the tightest of ships. A lot of creativity gets lost when rules are enforced to the bone. If you feel someone treats you too harshly, you can always complain to us. But we're not enforcers of any certain standard. We just see to it that things move more smoothly than they may once have moved.

For examples of moderation, there's a feedback thread around here somewhere. Might make an interesting read.

Here's something someone told me once

Quote
There is not such a thing as "talent", it is 1% inspiration, and 99% transpiration.
Practice is needed to become master.
Just like music or workout, you will not get muscles or make a masterpiece in one day.
Try to focus on enjoying the experience of arts, to feel the inspiration and express what is in your soul.
And most of all practice, practice...
This is what will make your arts to excel.

Guys not a bad artist either. I guess what I'm saying is, don't just assume you can't do it if you can't make a masterpiece straight away. Be ready to sacrifice time. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you can find someone talented who will be happy to help you because your ideas excite them. That's how you go from this to this. But then you have to understand that someone is sacrificing a lot of their free time out of the goodness of their heart to help you. Most of the time, you'll have to make do yourself unless you are really good at sweet-talking or are ready to pay for what you want.

It's silly to think that one can act like that, and it's silly to think that others enable.  There is a huge difference between criticizing and just being distastefully sardonic.  One is meant to correct wrong and to build up, and the other is meant to tear down, boast, or embarrass.

Well, you're not wrong here, I agree. On the other hand, if you take someone you've never met and will never actually meet personally, then you may want to reconsider hanging out on-line. It's going to happen. You art was absolutely atrocious, but didn't warrant the treatment. Wow, deja vu.

I love it when people older than me suddenly pop up. It's like watching the history channel. Stay around, why don't you?

Well I would, but I already filed my tax return. I don't know of any more recent info than what Zeracles posted I'm afraid.

Well technically this is the Yabb forum, it just got upgraded. All the old threads are still here. It can also be found on Wayback if you want to look at it in the flesh.

Whoops, forgot about that. It's all stuff on this forum, but the old host was annoying with links. If something catches your interest, I'm afraid you have to substitute our part of the URL. so

becomes

I recognize all of that except for Guillaume Lafranc. A quick google told me nothing. Care to elaborate?

For ore SCDB stuff, you could check the old History Thread.

Also, Zeracles is up to some form of indexing of SC history over at the Ultronomicon with plenty of threads at his talk page or whatchamacallit.

Tsing also recently made a new model and while Chad doesn't post much, he's around quite a lot nowadays.

I take it those companies don't take kindly to people hacking their way into their local Administrator account? :P

Not really. And as I'm on site here and using one of our customers computer so that I can access their IE 6 intranet, definitely not. Nothing gets factories as uppity as when the consultants hack their systems. Not that I'd have a clue about how to do that though.

Also UQMF went down in the middle of my BEL update. What gives?
Temporary glitch apparently.

Well, if perl works here, that makes putting up the Guide a pretty simple matter of copy/pasting some files and perhaps setting permissions on the part you execute.

I still want to try and get the planet database to something a little more standards-compliant though, as when I originally wrote it it was only compatible with Internet Explorer (bad me!). FireFox works, kind of, but none of the interactive stuff really works well/at all. Perhaps I can try to poke that monstrosity again later...

Yay, good news!
