3D Models

youBastrd! was kind enough to post up some Star Control 3D models he had access to.  He says, "I have no idea what the contents/quality of these models are.  They originally came from Archmage's ftp site."

I can only speak for myself...but my computer has no idea what it should use to open ".max" with. I've never heard of this extension before, and I've tried all my graphics programs. Is there something up here? Is this only my computer?

.max?  That's be 3DSMAX.  Or, 3-D Studio Max, a high-end and suitably high-priced rendering application.  You might think of it as the Photoshop of 3D rendering.  (To be honest though, I have no idea if 3DSMAX is better then, say, LightWave, but 3DSMAX is fairly well known.)
... and then on the 9th day, there was Flubbo...

3D Studio MAX is THE most used program in gaming and theatrical products these days.

Ok...but surely I'm not supposed to download/buy this entire program just to view these images...right?

those arent images..
they are MODELS!
3d models which you can make endless of images of, from every point of view, and add millions of effects to them.
Check out http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/fan/3drender.shtml for some examples of images made with that program

actually, yes you are supposed to do that, or get Gmax (free download) wich will probably work too.

I think there's an app "3D explorer" or something that you can view them with.
