Totally off topic, but...
If you need someone to tinker with ideas for a space-based game, look me up. I created an rpg totally based upon it. Well, d20 Modern rules, too.  ::)
By the year 2350 AD, humanity has burned up about 90% of the Earth's viable resources, the jobless percent is about 55, and homelessness is around that region, too. Scientists of the day figured that Earth has about 15 good years left in it. Now, humanity had been doing solar exploration in earlier years, but most things dealing with space had been scrapped or mothballed due to lack of interest/ need to put resources elsewhere. The powers that be, namely the United Federation of Nations (UFN) President, the EurAsian council, and a few previously unallied nations got together and discussed what should be done. To make a long story short, they decided on collectively pulling all their resources together, scrapping things they DIDN'T need (in essence, returning all un-needed items/buildings/etc. back into resources) and constructing a massive starship with which the whole (or most) of humanity could leave the barren Earth. The collective group combined into one faction; Terras Iunctus, or Earth United. With the combined might of the UFN's resources and engineering prowess and the EurAsian's manpower, the TI begain creating a massive mothership in the Russian plains, due to size matters. Needless to say, such a job created a huge demand for workers, and the jobless rate dropped to almost nothing. (Housing was provided for those that worked on the ship but did not have their own home, so that went down, too.) After ten years, construction was completed. The newly dubbed "Pioneer" was around 500k long, 200k tall, and 250k wide. It had everything needed: an artifically maintained biosphere, large living quarters, manufacturing bays, and most importantly, willing colonists. Using solar batteries, it took nearly a year and a half after its completion to give it enough power for the massive ion engines to lift off and leave Earth.
The TI's goal: Find a new home for the now wayward Terrans, and, if possible, find a way to save Earth itself.
I love having clones. I do all the bad stuff and the other me's gets blamed!

1)  Makes more sense if the ship was built in space -- as it is ion engines don't provide very good liftoff propulsion/size, and such a massive structure would never reach escape velocity (give me the weight and rought idea of aerodynamics and I'll tell you (roughly) the needed thrust).

2)  The odds of a single colony ship expiring in the harsh environment of space are terribly high.  Multiple ships are used in most sci-fi for the reason that the odds of finding a habitable planet alone are FAR too slim before the ship itself simple deteriorates.

3)  With so few resources available on earth, there would only be that same amount of resources available for wayward colonists (if not less).  Considering how long it takes at light speed to reach the nearest star, all that would arrive would be a ghost ship.

Overall I think you'd do best to rework your story based on actual science.  If actual science doesn't provide the forces you need (the pathetic output of Ion drives) make some up.  Hyperspace was obviously created to circumvent the insane distances traveled in SC2.  Perhaps the whole "Earth is wasted" basis isn't too terribly sound -- or maybe you need to give it a few more than 15 years -- after all, Earth has been working the whole "renewable resouces" game for millenia, I doubt a spaceship is going to beat it regardless of quality.

Anywho, just my $.02
