Films, Movies, Flicks
« on: February 25, 2003, 05:45:58 pm »
Seeing a couple of posts about the hypothetical SC movie got me thinking - what films do you like, Scott, should you read this? And, to an equal extend, everyone else who reads this?

The most recent film I saw that was any good was Donnie Darko - that was pretty decent.

Movies hmm... I like lots of diffrent movies
I love Sci-fiction and fantasy movies
I have been known to watch and enjoy those romantic movies

I could list a large number of movies Ive seen in the recent past which I liked,
which includes Two Towers (OMG I love that movie)

Signs was good and unbreakable... very neat things they do in those movies

I have no life it's 3:49 am... should go to sleep but im waiting for the full version of Earth and beyond to finish patching...

Ive been watching everybit of movie making bonus features I can find on movies to pick up on things I can use in the SC movies..

I hate the Lord of the Rings films - action movies with pointy belts. No artistic merit, woeful music, poor acting, and oh dear God so dull.

Heh, that's sure to spark off a few replies.... I disagree, even though I have to say that I enjoyed the first movie more than the second, but that was mainly do to the changes in story. The Faramir part was way annoying. But I suppose it's a matter of taste. I like woeful music, I thought the backgrounds were absolutely stunning, and I think the acting was quite good.

I have to disagree on two points, Viropher...

the films definately have artistic merit, methinks.  ESPECIALLY when compared to other fimls of our time! *cough Episode 2 cough*  Tolkien is perhaps the most "merited" art even turned into an action movie!

The music is by no means "woeful" and indeed is entirely fitting to a Tolkien movie!  While I can see you not liking it, I hardly think it's "woeful".

Acting... well, I agree and disagree with you.

some of the charaters are very well done.  Gollum, Gandalf, and Gimli are all acted superbly.  (Gimli was really reduced to comic relief, which is a shame, but he was still well acted.)  Galadriel too was done flawlessly.  Frodo, on the other hand, seems to be trying his hardest to look cute, not tortured.

As for dull, I think that FoTR was VERY exciting.  TT had far less excitement in it, although what little it did have was nice.

And, for the Record: FARAMIR SUCKED!

The music was indefensible shite - I care about music, and that noise was on a par with Wagnerian Nazi music... Perhaps worse, even, for having been made more anodyne and tawdry.

I don't like computer graphics in films. I like effects in games, demos, etc., but the temporary strength of flashy visuals pales, shrivels, and dies in comparison to properly good cinematography. All those sweeping landscape shots were rubbish, too, with the painfully "heroic" music causing all tone-sensitive people to squirm in their seats.

Also - battles aren't interesting. Christ, I was unbelievably bored watching that film.

And come on - that bit where Legolas skates down the stairs on a shield... Surely you felt at least slightly ashamed for watching such puerile nonsense?

I'll admit the surfing on the shiled was cheesy.

The rest of the battles were really cool though..  I remember watching it and thinking to myself, "this is what a D&D battle is supposed to be like... wow"

And I guess if you don't like CGI you don't like CGI, although I'm not sure I understand why you object to CGI in a movie...

I sitll maintain that the landscape shots combined made for a great atmosphere. An otherwordly kind of feeling, of times long past, of mists and moors, of a world that differs from ours, yet is hauntingly alike.

computer graphics isn't for everyone, but where do you draw the line? Before them, there were other special effects... And the story itself does become very hard to tell without them, seeing as the books aren't shy of using special effects either. and can you honestly say you didn't at least feel impressed a bit by the ents?

Battles aren't everyone's piece of cake, and they can become a little long if your not in the mood for one.

Wow your going to love my completly CGI movies!  :o
Id love to do a live action/cgi movie but that would cost gobs of money that I don't have. Even being the graphic artist I am I know live action would be far better for a large % of the stuff. Man the money I would spend on sets...

LOTR I think has excellent music and the landscapes I think they were some of the best parts in the movie, makes me want to visit New Zealand more than ever.
They cinematically, were done very well and I aspire to try and produce the quality seen in it.

I dislike some parts of the soundtrack mind you but the rest was great stuff. I especially like the Findle used in various parts of the Two Towers SDTK.

I'm big on documentary films.  Which a lot of people probably find boring but I find more interesting than mainstream because they are more true to life I think.  Anyway, some very good docs i've seen recently:

Crumb
Manufacturing Consent
Koyaanisqatsi
Hearts and Minds

all very recommended.

I just got through watching Band of Brothers on DVD.  I saw it when it was on HBO originally as well.

Great mini-series.

not to forget Westlife, unless I'm mistaken... It was all the rage last time I was there. Although apparently the irish themselves aren't that fond of them, there was even a story  in the papers about one of them getting beat up outside the locla skippers for making such crappy music :)
