Getting started guide

Alright, searching for "guide" has produced enough results that  can't filter out the junk from the gold.
So, I'm starting a topic.

I like that this game is non-linear, but it leaves me at a loss as to how to get started.

What do you do in the first few hours of gameplay?

What systems do you go to for resources, who do you try and establish contact with?

  I usually go to Pluto first, and recruit Fwiffo.  Assign as many crew as possible from the Flagship to Fwiffo's ship. 

  Then I go to the starbase orbiting Earth and talk to Commander Hayes.  I get some radioactive elements from Io (not Mercury, usually; it's too hot) and deliver them.  Then I go to the moon and investigate.  Then I return to the starbase once more and fight the Ilwrath. 

  Okay, I'm tired of typing.  Someone else take over!

After that, you need to gather enough fuel to fly to the Delta Crateris system. Things will figure itself out from there.

Myself, I usually mine for a bit after leaving sol. When the time comes for adventure, it helps to have full speed and thrusters, as well as a good helping of fuel and crew.

1) talk to Hayes.
2) Look carefully at the map that came with the game back in the day.
3) Go to town.

I generally try to make an alliance with the Spathi relatively early.  Talk to the Spathi starship captains; they'll tell you of a weird spatial anomaly.  Go check it out.  This will lead you to a very promising quest that will make things much easier for you.

Once you've finished with the preliminaries at Sol, you'll already have a few good leads on where to start. If you read all of Hayes's dialog responses, he'll divulge a wealth of information on good places to start looking for old allies, old enemies, and even resources.

And if your not using a walkthrough be sure to have a note book because there are lots of things to remember.

One thing about a walkthrough, you have to do whatever, even if you know what cha have to do.
Hmm this is interesting.  What i'm trying to say, it don't matter if your using a walkthrough or not, you still have to do the "next" thing in the story, no matter what your using.
I'd like to use my memory, but at this age, a walkthrough is so much better.  I can't even remember what I had for dinner, and I liked it.
