Avoiding Melee in SC2?
« on: January 11, 2010, 09:44:02 pm »
Hi! I'm an old retread from waaaay back, and I've once again pulled out my SC games and am considering going thru them again.   As I was originally a Starflight fan (That should tell you just HOW far back I go), I liked the exploration and adventure aspect of the games.  That was what brought me to the SC franchise to begin with.  Not being an arcade type of guy though, I'm no fan of the melee's.  I KIND OF remember (and I could be wrong) that in SC1, you could automate the melee portions of the game, and just settle for the outcome.  As I recall, I found no way to do that in SC2. (or was it SC3?)

Did I remember this right, or has alzheimer's made it's intro into my life?  Also, if I HAVE remembered this correctly, is there a way to bypass or at least automate the melee sequences?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can let the computer take over for you. I'm not sure I'd advise it, though. Better just to beef up your flagship to the point where 'melee' is synonymous with 'long-range bombardment of doom.' The AI is going to end up getting you blown up.

I agree with the fossa. Use the cyborg with caution. Probably more importantly, if you want to minimize combat, install as many thrusters as possible on your flagship - then you can outrun most hostiles.

Yeah, if you rough it out until you have full thrusters/turning jets you become pretty uncatchable. The Cyborg will handle some battles brilliantly, but others quite horribly. You can try this out in SuperMelee. Set both players to Cyborgs and give them the ship combinations you're interested in. If your ship gets wiped out easily, don't try the same in full the full game.

Can you use the Cyborg in the game instead of the super melee?  I'm still trying to find out how to shoot my weapons, its been 30+ years since i've played this game and remembering is troublesome.

Yup, you can set it in one of the menus. Beware though, the Cyborg isn't smart. Playing yourself, you can use that to your advantage, easily defeating the enemy with most basic ships. But if you use the Cyborg, your losses will be higher until you find ships that really benefit from ligtning reflexes.

We're happy to help. One of the first ships you find is surprisingly effective as long as you manage to keep your distance. Let us know if you run into more trouble :)
