Good God man, almost EXACTLY the same as mine - except I had TV Sports Football instead of Fallout. But the site didnt recognise TV Sports Football! It's only the 4th best every video game. Sheesh

Wikipedia actually has a really nice article on RTS games and their history..

But basically, it all boils down to this:
Pre-Herzog Zwei (a lot of titles!): build of strategic/economic concepts and other gameplay related mechanics.
Herzog Zwei: core concepts of an RTS game.
Dune II: mouse-driven interface; refinement of core concepts.
Total Annihilation: refinement of interface.
Starcraft: refinement of multiplayer gameplay.
Post-Starcraft: step into 3d, specialization, experimentation. Note however that not many games after Starcraft have really influenced the genre much; Strategic zoom (Supreme Commander) isn't in all games, 3d movement (Homeworld) isn't in all games, etc. But you bet your ass almost all games contain features from the core four influential titles!

Vote cast.  Star Control/II and Ur-Quan masters.  Also others.

I think that lists of top 100 anything (particularly computer games) are all a bit silly because it's highly dependent on what's popular at the moment and the demographic that's participating.  That said I still enjoy them - even if for nothing more than the inevitable "WERE IS GAme XXX.  best gamE EVA!!!!!111!!!1" and then watching the poor organisers try and explain what voting and democracy is.

However the problem I had with PC Gamers list is that one only gets five choices - more are needed.  I can't even rank my top favourite games, let alone reduce it to five.  And the list of choices was lacking.  I know it's a PC games list but it missed lots of old games and freeware games.  Ah, well...

I didn't vote because it's only PC games :). If I were to compile a list of my fav games, it'd be as follows:

1. World of Warcraft (PC)
2. Mass Effect (Xbox 360)
3. Star Control 2 (PC)
4. Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)
5. Warcraft 3 (PC)

I absolutely agree. I usually ignore all top lists like these, because I think they are a bit pointless. In this case though, the argument that we're attempting to gear up for a new sequel resonates with me. It probably won't go anywhere, but you never know.
Round and round it goes, where it stops nobody knows

I had the opposite problem, I really haven't played very many games and tried to submit just three - SC2, Doom and StarCraft. It demanded two more so I just added the other SC and Final Doom.
Fear not the Arch Viles and Spectres of the Deepest Reaches, for the X is strong in this place.

In my next life I would like to be a pootworm. ANNIGILATE ME!

On a, slightly, related note, With Mass effect 2 coming out, Star Control 2 might get moved to the fourth place.

Judging from the movies at http://www.youtube.com/user/biowaremasseffect , the character development and storyline in Mass effect 2 looks incredible. I can't wait, and it's also a good sign that such a recent popular game is so heavily inspired by Star Control 2 and takes it to a next level!

Mass Effect was a great game, it definitely has close connections to SC2. Cant wait for sequel!
And that's all I got to say about that.
