This was probably mentioned before but the question popped up again; Who's scary, unkempt appendage is that holding a planet on the SC box? Yehat? And who is that crimsom monstor on the SC2 box? ZEX's beauty?

1.  It's Boris Vallejo's hand. 
2.  I think it's supposed to be an Ur-Quan.

I don't think its an Ur-Quan, they have a slimey, tenticle-ish covered mouth as opposed to huge, spikey teeth....

Generally, disagreeing with Eth about something SC related is bad.  I think that's just an artist's rendition of an Ur-Quan, not necessarily TFBs ideal UQ.

I do think that the hand is a drawing BY Vallejo, rather than his hand.  He's a professional fantasy artist  .

Ah, good point, those artists can't get anything right! (blinking VUX, beakless Orz) Did this Boris guy do the box art?

This may be a stretch, but if you squint there is something vaguely Ilwrath-like about that creature. Though as I understand it the artist was only given a vague outline and just made something without seeing the game itself.

Maby he was just looking at his hand while drawing the picture to, you know, give him an example. (I'm not saying he has 2 thumbs though!)

Actually, the box art for SC2 (PC/3DO) wasn't made by Vallejo at all, I think.
Vallejo did the box art for the Sega Genesis version of SC1.
