Unless I'm misreading things, the two of you are actually both agreeing with each other. Or does one of you think Angelfish's theory is more likely? I'm not sure, this has turned confusing.

I turned left at my last post. My second-to-last post was elaborating on the previous. Suffice it to say, I don't buy Angelfish's theory.

 Yeah, but aren't the Androsynth all genetically-identical clones?  *Smell* one, and you can *smell* 'em all, maybe?

If that's how it works, maybe what the arilou did to modify humanity's *smell* is make us more diverse. Like scattering the species in prehistoric times (they allude to knowing the first human, whatever that means) and throwing spanners into the works of history at the ``right" places. Indirect modifications like that are preferable to direct genetic alterations in view of what they say about humans being beautiful and unspoiled.

Maybe that's why all the aliens are so homogeneous. Only we have developed comparable diversity, because the Arilou made us do it.

I read somewhere a while back that the entire human population of Earth has less genetic diversity than the average tribe of wild chimpanzees. So I don't know if that's particularly heterogenous, really. In fact, in light of that, it sounds like the Arilou may have made us MORE homogeneous, possibly to ensure that their changes stuck and were easy to implement on a large scale.

More seriously, it could be that the diversity the Arilou inserted is very specific.

Hang on, I don't think this is quite as flippant as it seems; perhaps any intelligent species requires some level of homogeneity for civilisation to function properly (like society weeding out misfits), so a comparison with chimpanzees might be misleading, seeing as they aren't exactly civilised. So while humans might be less diverse than anything else on Earth, they might still be more diverse than the civilised aliens out there.
