StarControl mods page
« on: September 27, 2009, 06:44:57 am »
As was promised when the new site launched, we're working on making it more than a skeleton site. One step on that path is filling out the site with new pages. We're now launching the Mods page, which basically tells you what kind of mods there are in the Star Control world. This page, like every other page on the PNF needs fans and helpers to make it stay topical. I've added the working mods I'm aware of, which are mostly for UQM. If you know of any mods (especially for other games and the original titles) that I've missed, be sure to let me know here in this thread, via email or some other magical way. I'll update the list with any other SC related and themed mod I can get my grubby little hands on.

I think you should put all the Star Control clones in there as well and rename the section to 'mods & clones'.
What would you give to know the truth?

That's an interesting idea. Are there a lot of complete clones though? The purpose of the mod page is to link people to stuff that can actually be used right off, such as the completed UQM mods and the Sins mod. For instance, I didn't mention the Cookies Mod or Nicholai's UQM Mod, since those aren't usable. A list of all the half-finished clones floating around out there might be interesting, but I don't think it ought to sort with the actual usable stuff.

Surely, you can split them by 'complete' and 'not complete', but the definition of 'complete' is a tough one.

Timewarp, for example, is very playable, but by definition of the makers it was not complete, since they wanted to add a story mode to it. Nevertheless, I think it's good if the visitors could see what effort went into it and have fun with playing it for themselves.

Perhaps it's better to just list these mods and clones, provide a link to them and a short description, and mention whether they have been discontinued or that there's still being worked on.

Not listing them at all is not fair to all the time and effort that went into those, even if they weren't continued, since after all they were trying to create something fun for the SC community to play.

Some of these projects could use links to them so that new blood can come in an help work on them, too.  We're supposed to be the Grand Nexus of Star Control, right?

That's a good point. But I'd rather make another page called "clones" or "Classic projects" under fan content and link all the unfinished stuff over there. I'd like the "Mods" section to lead to only usable stuff, rather than a confusingly varied set of links to projects in different states. We've got two half finished projects under "Links" right now, it might make sense to move them and compile all this information on a new page. I don't know all the clones and side projects very well though, so if anyone can post some links and descriptions I'd be thankful. Otherwise I'll have start trawling through a lot of stuff.

Some of these projects could use links to them so that new blood can come in an help work on them, too.  We're supposed to be the Grand Nexus of Star Control, right?

I doubt anyone will be able to straighten out the old codes without the old makers, but in essence you're right. They should be linked from somewhere on PNF.

Found an error we have to fix , the Mod for Sins is backwards. Seven Deadly Sins is the name of the mod not the name of the game.  ;) ;)

I would prefer if you took Adjusted Ship Price Mod right off of there. It's misleading to have me and Elvish Pillager credited on a joint project; some might expect it to be this awesome collaboration between two of the most obsessed melee players when it's barely a blip on the radar compared to our separate projects. The scores we thought up at the time aren't even right.

Crazy Mod and Balance Mod on the other hand deserve more than a mere mention on a list, but that can be left for another time.

Shiver, you specifically gave feedback in the last thread on how all mods should be included. I suppose I could edit the names of your mods to link to the current Ultronomicon pages, that'd give a bit more information.

As for the other clones and stuff, I'll start thinking about a page for those. I know there are people around who know a lot more about TW and Gob than me, so any linkage and such to most recent versions and different playable versions would be appreciated, it'll save me time.

Scott, their project thread in our mods board reads

Sins of a Solar Empire - 7 Deadly Sins mod (SC content!)

Are you sure it's the wrong way around?

Nice (though the text on that page could do with some minor edits). I suggest a fourth column with links to corresponding forum threads.

Huh. I guess I'll have to fix that then unless you do it before me ;)

I don't think it's guaranteed to work on a PSP.

Feel free to suggest any improvements. All member input is appreciated. I originally had a fourth column with a small explanation, but depending on low resolutions that causes side scrolling, which isn't good. As per Shivers feedback, I might turn the name into a thread link for mods without their own web pages.

Shiver, you specifically gave feedback in the last thread on how all mods should be included.

The page looks good for the most part. I just don't see a need to cover Adjusted Ship Price Mod, and as one of its authors want it taken down from the page.

I don't think the licensing model that UQM uses allows for full control over the way that derivatives are distributed.
