New Star Control Webcomic: That Ur-Quan Master
« on: September 10, 2009, 11:26:47 pm »
Announcing a new weekly SC-related webcomic: That Ur-Quan Master by Ethan Fleischer and Jesse Dew.  Follow the story of the lowest-ranked battle thralls aboard a Dreadnought during the Ur-Quan Conflict.

Experience:
A.  Fascinating alien cuisine.
B.  Practical jokes perpetrated against the most dangerous sentient species known.
C.  Substance abuse among the stars.  And,
D.  A plethora of absurd haberdashery.

Is it just me, or does it look a bit crunched in the small window? It almost looks like it's displaying in the wrong resolution or something.

Looking forward to more just the same, though. :)

It was originally drawn at full print resolution, and then reduced for the web.  That was about as big as I could make it and have it still fit on most monitors.

Screw the Russians and their crappy monitors. Nobody with any self-respect has a vertical resolution under 1024 these days.

Question: How much *buffer* do you have? (meaning: How many strips are complete at the moment?)

* EDIT *

Looks like that was already answered on UQM forums (5 comics).

Yeah, 5 extra comics, for a total of 6.  As the originals are at high rez, I can make the web versions larger as big monitors become more popular.  I certainly think that a little bit bigger would look better, but I really want to have the whole thing visible at once if at all possible.

You could always offer them in a 'custom' resolution. I think you can read the window size in flash, so that could be an automatic thing where it adjusts the size of the comic to your screen resolution. Then just upload the comic in a few different sizes and have it pick the right one for the job.

Man, I missed the launch... Oh well, great work anyhow! I love the fact that it's a weekly, it means we'll have stuff to look forward to for a loong time to come. The concept is quite good as well, I find myself eagerly awaiting the next prank.
Round and round it goes, where it stops nobody knows

I can only assume that he ordered it over the internet, and it was delivered in a discreetly plain brown package.

Hello, everyone. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Jesse Dew and I am the fantasy illustrator responsible for the conceptual sketches, penciling and inks for "That Ur-Quan Master". I met Ethan while attending Antioch College several years ago and we became friends, sharing a solid fascination in science fiction, animation and the storytelling medium of comics. I focused on traditional painting and fantasy illustration laced with anime influence (which I am ever-so-slowly shaking) while Ethan went on to get art degree in Animation and continues to inspire me with his knowledge and understanding of what drawing and painting technology have to offer. We had been interested in doing a comic together for a long time and I am excited to see this dream come to life. Don't forget to tune in each week....our readers mean a lot to us!
Jesse

Jesse Aaron Dew is a Chef, visual artist, musician, songwriter and avid video gamer from West Palm Beach, Florida. His fascination with Japanese animation and visual arts led him to attend Antioch College in Yellowsprings, OH where he studied art, music and Japanese, graduating with a Bachelor of Language in 2000. There he met Ethan Fleischer and the two have been friends ever since. He currently lives in Portland, OR where he cooks by day and paints by night.
