Best ship for a stand-alone game?
« on: August 31, 2009, 09:02:29 pm »
So, I've had to do some Flash animations for work lately, and I've been thinking... one day when I have some time, I might like to make a small Flash game where a single ship from SC2 flies around and attacks multiple enemies.

I want to make it absolutely identical in flight as the real thing, but instead of there being one enemy, there is a swarm of them to overcome.

So... assuming I ever get to do this, which SC2 ship would be the best for this sort of thing?

Id say the Avatar but that might just be because there my favorite next to the Yehat Terminator. And a terminator probably wouldn't win a fight like that.
And that's all I got to say about that.

Somehow, when making SC-like games, I always end up using the Utwig Jugger as my first ship. It's quite powerful against a lot of SC ships, but I guess it all depends on who the enemies are going to be.
For arcade-like games I recommend using the terminatorm as it's quite a simple ship with basic functions which are quite common in such games.

Do you intend on using just the flash IDE for development or are you going to include heavy AS3 scripting and use for example FlashDevelop?

Isn't there a game like this already? Gob, or something?

As for the ship, you'd ideally want something that can take on all the other ships, but isn't too powerful. I think the jugger is too good - it can wipe the floor with a lot of ships. The terminator is a good idea, but it's a little slow. The Nemesis would be a good choice, perhaps even the Trader?

Surely, GOB is there already and it's great! But making a GOB-like game in flash is also a lot of fun, and can attract lots of new people to the star control universe :).
I personally think the trader is too boring to fly for more than a few battles.
The nemesis in itself is quite a good ship to fly, and it being a flash game you can even make the controls easier, so that you don't have to control the turret with the movement keys but make the turret point in the direction of the mouse, click to fire it, and have keyboard controls for movement only and to activate the special *GO* *GO* :).

I can't think of anything worse... well, I can, but the Eluder's a pretty dull ship to fly.

Now that I've had time to ponder, I think that the Marauder would be a great ship to use. It's very strong, but is still interesting to pilot. In addition, thematically it would work well in a 1 ship vs. everyone else type setup: "Kohr-Ah: Annigilate". Another one that would work well thematically in such a stituation would be the probe, though in practical terms it might not be such a great choice.

While I appreciate the support for my excellent choice of ship, I suspect you may be somewhat biased in your choice, Mr. Death...

Oohh... I got an idea that could allow a few different ships.  Of course this means I'll never finish this game, because it's too complicated, but at least it will be fun to start.  Check this out:

Delta Star, I only see some kind of alarm light with thrusting fire behind it.. is that your intention or should something happen to it?

Aw, I guess that's some bad art on my part :(  It needs better shading and once you see it in action it will look better.

Still, it's a pretty faithful representation of an actual in-game ship that I know you can ID if you take another look at it.  Try again?

Another good choice, I think, would be the Chenjesu. But, as you say, it's not so vital to have exactly one ship now.

Hehe, I'm sorry, I didn't really take a thorough look at it because I was at work. I certainly see that it's an ur-quan fighter now :D.
