To all European/Aus/NZ SC fans...
« on: August 19, 2009, 05:45:17 am »
Hi all

This is very cheeky but for some VERY exciting research purposes, I was wondering if any SC fans living in the EU can tell me their favourite regional gaming blogs and sites...for if you're French, what's the French gaming site or blog you frequent, etc.

I can only repay you in the form of perhaps one day regaling you with the story of recording the dialogue for the SC2 end sequence...hah.

Thanks!

Arianna Reiche

'fraid I'm not Australian, European or Newzealandish but nevertheless I'd suggest Retro Remakes (where I lurk quite a lot).  It's largely British but continetals rock up fairly often.  I'm not sure if you're looking for comerical review blogs or indie development but you'll find the second sort there.  If you dig through links in signatures and profiles of top posting members you'll find all sorts of ... ah ... strange and interesting stuff.

Unfortunately the games showcase is gone (it had a bit of a crash and burn) but you can still get to an alphabetical list of games from the fontpage.  You'll need to do some trawling because some of the links - whilst not dead - are old.  Again most of the links will take you to development type blogs.

That's my two cents, hope it's what you're looking for.

I don't really read any gaming blogs. I do occasionally check out pelit.fi, which is the site of the biggest gaming magazine in Finland, but usually I just browse through their magazine at the local library.

I don't know anything about gaming sites outside SC, much less anything Australian ;D

Come to think of it, I know next to nothing about games made this century . . . apart from Dragon's remake perhaps :D

Hmm. I hope it helps your research to find out that most SC fan's don't follow modern gaming very closely.

You think? I'd say that conclusion might be a tad premature... what do you base it on, personal experience?

I was talking solely about the posts in this thread. Maybe you should try answering the original question Rider? You're European, what blogs do you go to?

I generally despise blogs, so that would be none. ;)

Same here. Though it is important to emphasise that such apathy does not apply the inevitable SC2 sequel, for which we all have unbounded enthusiasm.

I don't peruse any gaming blogs or websites, apart from those associated with ancient games.

I usually check Gamer.nl, a dutch site which always has neat video's and reviews of new games.

I also don't have the apathy vs. new games that a lot of people here have, I just love gaming and if there's a game out that gives me some enjoyment for a while I'll buy it and play it. Some games have even surpassed Star Control 2 in my all time favorite games. I've given up waiting for a sequel, because I have the impression that the powers that be (TFB and the trademark holders Atari) don't care that much about Star Control anymore to make a sequel, and even if they do it remains to be seen whether it will have the same fun play value as Star Control 2 did for me.
What would you give to know the truth?

Time's an important ingredient, as all SCers know ;D

I also don't have the apathy vs. new games that a lot of people here have
I don't dismiss new games offhand, I just don't know much about them, and neither do the mates I hang with. The most recent game I happen to own is StarCraft, and the most recent game I've played is Unreal Tournament. Perhaps I should stop going out and spend some quality time in front of the computer, since there are some newer things that interest me, like Doom 3 and Civilization*. Anyway, in the absence of any experience of new games, I think the natural assumption is that they're all inferior to Star Control ;)

I've given up waiting for a sequel
If I'm not misreading these things, as long as the trademark still has value (as evidenced by Atari holding onto it), there are still people in the gaming business who think there is a decent chance of a new Star Control being made. And we mustn't forget 2-23-6 and his millions coming to the rescue - here's hoping the recession lasts long enough ;)
