star-control.comWelcome to the new and improved Pages of Now and Forever! As most of you know, the PNF has been in a state of disrepair for quite some time. We have been more of an aimlessly drifting white dwarf than the bright shining star on the SC heavens we ought to be. Today this changes. Today you witness the launch of a new and improved PNF, geared toward the new world in which it exists.
The
old PNF had become weighed down by a lot of old baggage. It was full of broken code and missing links. Rebuilding the site from those old fragments would have been hard and time consuming. The old site simply wasn’t intended for the times we live in. Therefore, we are launching fresh, redoing most of the material. You’ll also notice that we’re launching a bare bones site, in order to get things moving. As you browse the site you’ll notice that material is missing. Please be patient. We had to think long and hard, but in the end we figured it’d be better to launch the skeleton site now rather than waiting another year or two. IGN/Gamespy shutting down their hosting services helped with the decision too

At first glance, I’m sure you don’t think there’s a lot of difference. There’s still the blue menu to the left side (albeit crisper looking), the same headers, the same feel. There is a reason for this. PNF has been around for a long time and changing the site into something unrecognizable simply didn’t sit right with us. Don’t let the surface fool you though, under the surface things have changed. Oh how they have changed.
To begin with, PNF has been retooled towards a new role in the SC fandom. Back in the day, this site was the primary repository of Star Control knowledge. If you wanted to find out something about the SC universe, this is where you came. If you wanted your fan art hosted, this was where you came. If you wanted to write fan fiction, this is where you came.
But times have changed. Getting website and picture hosting is no longer an obstacle for most people and new sites have sprung up like particularly tasty Mycons after a light lava rain. We have been plodding majestically forward without a purpose. Here is what we'll be focusing on...
We’ll put some effort into introducing the series to new players. Under each game you’ll find an “Introduction” section, with some text, pictures from the games, and links to relevant sites and people. In addition to that, we'll later add the old pages to the SC1, SC2 and SC3 articles. You won't see every bit of content that you used to find because sites such as the Ultronomicon exists nowadays, and covers more in depth material better.
Our next task is that of a portal. If you look at the new menu, you’ll find that we’ve included links to the main Star Control community sites out there in order to make them easy to find. In addition to this, we’ve gone through the sites we know of and added them to our links section with small explanations. The idea is that PNF will become a map to the SC fandom on-line, showing newcomers and oldies alike where Star Control content can be found. Here, we would like to ask for your assistance. If you know of a site we haven’t linked, please let us know. All SC sites must be found and made part of the Hierarchy.
Finally, we’ll keep doing parts of what PNF did well before. We’ll still host art, music, files and fan content of all sorts. If you require hosting for any SC related reason, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll try to keep you up to date on what’s happening in the SC world by making informative news posts.
There is now
a team of three people working on the site. Chad is the webmaster who owns the site. Scott Irving is his trusty sidekick, working hard on the machinery in the background. Lukipela, oversees content and additions. Our contact information can be found on the
about page. Let us know what you think about the site, both good and bad. You can reach us either by email or on our forum, the SCDB. A site like this lives and dies with it’s members, so please let us know what you think, what you’d like to see, what you don’t think is important.
A special thanks to
Arne for the site design and neat scripts!
