Sins of a Solar Empire - 7 Deadly Sins mod (SC content!)

For those that do not know, there is a mod called 7 Deadly Sins for Sins of a Solar Empire.  The mod started by incorporating other mods into it, such as new planet types and visual effects.  The creator, Danman, also had the intent of adding Star Control races into the game.  That was over a year ago.

Today, we already have 2 SC races in the game, the Kohr-Ah and the Arilou.  We've taken the basic idea of Arilou ships as your typical UFOs, and ran with that.  The classic Skiff comes in regular frigate and hero capital ship versions.  They rely on two different types of motherships as their base of operations, they build the other ships.  One of the mothership models, the smaller one, is a placeholder until we have one we like more.  Many liberties were taken with the ships' appearances.

The Kohr-Ah were very strictly based around the Kohr-Ah Marauder's design.  The whole fleet is a menacing group, and every ship, even the scouts, can bomb planets.  For balance, frigate bombing is fairly weak, but doable.  The Kohr-Ah Titan will be the Sa-Matra, which all of you should know quite well.  We're not including the surrounding asteroids for it, but the ship will be a menacing SOB.  It will be in the next release.  For those that don't know what a Titan is, consider it...a ship of certain death and destruction that's ready to blow enemy fleets into their material components.  For scaling, the Super Star Destroyer would qualify as a decent Titan for the Galactic Empire.

The Sa-Matra will also be featured as the Kzer-Za's titan.  The Kzer-Za will join either the Druuge or Chmmr in the next release.  The Chmmr will include the Mmrnmhrm and Chenjesu, using their old ships as 'dated designs' and inter-joining ship designs.  The Druuge will contain a number of ships designed around a large gun or gun system.

The Earthlings and Mycon will be the next species done, and we want to get them all done, and maybe add a couple more after the more canon races are done.

EDIT. Newspost done. Haven't got much to moffer this project, since my artistic skills are pretty lacking. I guess I could try some voice acting, but I don't know what is needed for that. I've got a mic (albeit just for VOIP) and I could probably talk in some dialogue. At the very least it'd give my girfriend something new to roll her eyes about :) Send me a PM with some details and we can find out if I can be in any way useful.

I think the Arilou style is pretty fitting, although those ships with cannons poking in every direction were unexpected. Kind of hard to see the shape of the Kohr-Ah, but they seem to have a lot of sharp edges. Is that an engine limitation, or were you going for that look? there are some other ships in the background of the Kohr-aH picture to the left, are those other Kohr-Ah classes?

I will warn that it's a hardware intensive game, with thousands of ships going around and beating eachother with death rays and all.

Perhaps not for me, then. Looks pretty sweet though.

I edited my original post to include what a Titan is.  Basically, it's a supership, stronger than anything else in the fleet.  Or, as I put it in the original post:

For those that don't know what a Titan is, consider it...a ship of certain death and destruction that's ready to blow enemy fleets into their material components.  For scaling, the Super Star Destroyer would qualify as a decent Titan for the Galactic Empire.

I was attempting to help with this mod but I got kinda busy working on the pnf redo. I do still have other models if needed.

Also, I was curious, is the 7 deadly sins a strictly package deal? Or will you be able to get the SC races separately at some point?

Greetings All!

I am DANMAN, the creater and leader of the 7 DEADLY SINS mod project for Sins of a Solar Empire.  I am also the President and owner of DANMAN GAMES, a new gaming company dedicated to modding and making new games with the gamer and modder in mind, since we are made up of gamers and modders!

I wanted to let you know the Star Control has been in my life since I was about 12.  I have always loved it, and thought that I should pay it homage since I loved it so much and it inspired my life.

I wanted to let you all know that we are progressing well with the Star Control content of 7 DEADLY SINS, and I WILL be making a separate Star Control mod for all you fans out there that just want the Star Control Stuff.  I am also using authentic sounds when possible, and Rider has been helping with new voice overs.  They sound great!  Gihren has helped with with sounds as well, and also modeling and 2d Art for loading screens and character portraits.  It is really coming together, and hopefully will become the "unofficial" sequel that everyone has been waiting for!  Some of the models, namely the Skiff, are courtesy of Scott Irving.  And Scott, if you can read this, you aren't returning my emails!  We could use more models if you have them, and I would like it very much to be able to add content to the Star Control movie you are making.  We can use in game video for the movie even, the quality is that good.

I never heard any of that Dan.

We'd have to get rights from TFB for the name, and Activision for the rights to the game.  I never heard if Stardock successfully bought the rights or not, but I never saw a post saying 'sold to Stardock' so I'll assume they were denied.

Yeah, that's big bad itself.  It couldn't only have one gun and be a 'Dreadnought' so some were added.  Note the green and red lights for the hangars in back.




Big Bad's big brother.  It doesn't have an official name yet, and it will likely have MORE guns than that when it's done.

The new Ur-Quan certainly looks impressive. The big brother does as well, although it looks a bit like two smaller ones smacked together. Out of curiosity, are the other planned species going forward as well? The mod is really impressive, I'm impressed by all the effort you're putting in.

I'm also happy to hear that the mod is progressing well, but I don't think Danman has much of a chance to get a green light from TfB. Making a non profit mod is one thing, making an official sequel is very different.

I've heard that the last model I posted is still an incomplete ship, so it may take a small leap from what's seen.

The planned species are still in the planned section.  Each ship can take several to dozens of hours just to model and texture.  Coding the models (for the game), the ships' files, sounds, and art is more hours.  Then you have to code the race with its unique characteristics, textures, the ships and stations you have, and then coding chunks of that into the giant string code.  We're also moving from the original game to its expansion version, which opens many modding ports. 

In short, they're coming. but 2d art takes a while, 3d takes forever.  It'll be out before we earn a vaporware award, we release as we make major breakthroughs, and our team has expanded a lot.

Just FYI- the things on the sides of the ur-quan vessel are hyperspace warp pods. Using the same base model and adding 2 more warp pods, just saying, wouldn't really improve the ship much except in reducing warp time between planets. Of course, that's not particularly important, just thought I'd point that out for continuity sake.

girhen: I'm sorry if I came off as critical somehow, I do understand that this kind of 3D work takes a lot of time. I'm eagerly looking forward to future races :)

spinsane: I only recall the warp pod being called "starboard warp pod", not any mention of that being the only task those things on the sides have. The warp pod could be one piece fo machinery among many contained there. Or do you have some quote that I've missed ready?
