So this is really interesting. A fellow called dreamer posted a working StarCon proto over in the news thread. Anthony from StarController confirms that it works and is stable, he is playing it right now. At least my cursory examination with AVG andZoneAlarm didn't set off any alarms.

That makes me very curious. If this proto has existed all along, how is it that you haven't heard of it? Why have we only seen a single video instead of the proto in the last few months? I guess all is well that ends well, but something smells fishy here.

Because we're lazy, and didn't bother to google it?

Just going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing starlord did google "StarCon proto" before forking over 500$ for a copy. Crazy, I know. To be honest, the best case alternative here is that starlord got scammed pretty badly by someone and saddled with a broken copy that he's been diligently working on restoring. In that case I guess all's well that end's well (except his bank account unfortunately). On the other hand Dreamer tells me that the proto has been floating around on the net since some time before 2008 and is common knowledge among collectors.

Just because starlord was having some trouble converting the CD-ROM to a transmissible file doesn't mean that his copy was "broken," y'know.  You're so suspicious.   :)

Er, any reason you're just adressing one word somewhere in the middle of a big sentence? Anyhow, from what (admittedly little) research I've done, if you have a disc that works on a ePSX the actual copying process shouldn't be very challenging unless the physical disc has some sort of integrity problems. So by broken copy I simply mean that he apparently got a copy that is much harder (maybe even impossible) to transfer than a fully functioning disc would be.

In the best case scenario it sucks for starlord that someone scammed him selling something that is apparently free and saddled him with a product that is very time consuming and hard to copy. But like I said, all is well that ends well. At least he doesn't need to keep working on it now.

Maybe Starlord is like Irving and like collecting the stuff?  Irving, if you remember, has SC1 for PC and Sega, and SC2 and SC3 for 3DO and PC.  While many of us are happy to be able to play it in some way, some seem to want the physical evidence of having it.

Indeed, ripping discs can be hard sometimes, with bad sectors (on purpose), sub data and all sorts of other things. Physical copies of things are nice. Which reminds me I need to update my "SC collection grows" topic.  ;D

What? Someone beat me to it? :o

I was about to tell you that despite another vid being in the works, we yet have to compensate for a number of bad sectors present on the images. Quite curious actually: we've never seen anything like it (although for the doubters among you, my CD is perfectly operational).

Also, dreamer: where did you say your proto came from? also which build is it (that is the date creation of the proto)?

Well in any case, should you still be interested scott, I'm keeping my proto for your convenience...
and I'll try that other proto out to see what's what...

Also, you didn't hear of this simply because AFAIK the proto dump didn't exist at the time. And I should know: My proto is also signed from the playstation museum, so I believed that this is a dump of a second proto originating from there  ;D (this was supposed to stay off the works, but now it can't do any harm). therefore, should i have heard earlier of this, i certainly would have refrained from buying my proto.

From what dreamer told me in PM's, he acquired it back in 2008 but it has been floating around in the proto communities he visits for a bit longer than that. I guess you're sources aren't as good as you thought. It's a pity you spent a lot of money on something that was (apparently) already available for free, but at least your main task has succeeded, the proto is now widely available to everyone.

Given the problems I had by securing my proto from them, it's amazing that dreamer was able to acquire it from the play museum.

It's not, because I didn't. The dump was circulating among collectors for quite a while, and it's coming from the disc previously owned by the Playstation museum. It just wasn't available to the public.

Hell! I bought this proto, while the dump was out? :o

Oh well! I guess it's just that I take preservation issues very seriously. :)

I wonder dreamer, where did you get across this?

It wasn't that hard, as you made topics on this in almost every forums that I visit. When I came here, I expected the proto to be out already. It wasn't, so I uploaded it.
