Since this seemed like the one and sole place to post this, I would like to notify you all that I have acquired a prototype of the aborted starcon.

While I don't have a real use for the proto myself, perhaps the community might be interested to voice their ideas (also, perhaps someone in here might be interested for a purchase?).

Hey! that's excellent news! Hopefully you didn't end up paying those bloodsuckers. Has the prototype been put in some online vault? I recall you talking about that. As for uses, we should definitely link to wherever it is stored, or upload it to the site.

Waaait a minute. This smells really really fishy. I didn't notice that part to begin with, but wasn't Starlord the "Preservation" guy who wanted information to be free and everyone to have access to ensure that the game survives? You know, the guy who wanted to get hold of the proto to make an ISO and upload it to the net. And now that he has found it, he is trying to actually sell it? For a guy who was outraged when someone wanted money for their proto, this seems to be very out of character. Have you actually uploaded this somehwere starlord? Is it free and available to ensure that it survives? Or have you gone corporate on us?

Yeh, your right, maybe the original ended up costing money and now that it's been backed up he no longer wants the original. Either way Id be interested in purchasing it but that would depend on cost. Though my intention in buying it would be to play it and suck as much information as I could out of it about what the game was to be. Then of course post it on PNF

My question is this, sir: "Are you willing to distribute the contents of the prototype disc freely on the internet, for the good of all mankind?"

No, don't worry:

The proto is preserved and is here to stay, and whatever the decision, the star control board will have access to it (while a dev PS1 is necessary to read it, emulation is also the ticket to enjoy it).

However, protos are expensive, and securing this one has cost me quite a bit of pain, however: there are loads of other protos up there also that need preserving, and I hardly have the resources to acquire others at that rythm.

This is why even though the dump is going to be made (actually, the process has started already as I have supplied the TOC of the disk to one of my partners), I would truly like to find a seller for the true proto (or perhaps someone capable of trading another proto for it), in order for this effort to continue to pay off, you see? This way, perhaps other protos will benefit from this. I can also garantee that this will probably be the less expansive starcon proto you will find on the net.

That is what I plan to do. Whatever the issue though, don't worry: Starcon will be preserved and available to all. I promised that already.

Scott? You said you would be interested? Once the dump is complete, I would have no objections.

Fair enough, I apologize for jumping to conclusions. While I'm not interested in buying it myself I hope you find a buyer. And again, congratulations!

On a side note it really annoys me that starlord wouldn't have been out that much money if Chad had only had the energy to track down his copy. But that's life I guess.

Being a space sim fan myself, I wouldn't have justified the fact that starcon be lost in oblivion.

And what good is it if it's remembered only by a few elitist collectors?

Personnally (don't blame me for speaking treason), but I always thought that a star control diplomacy system allied with a space sim game would be a swell idea. The only space sim so far I've seen proposing some degree of diplomacy was forced alliance: the glarious mandate.

That may be one of the reasons I want to probe starcon...

I would be interested, thought money being the big thing, I'm not wealthy by any means, but I've been buying gobs of SC off ebay mostly duplicates, this would be sorta a one of a kind thing (almost ;-))
