Shivers Balance Mod
« on: March 24, 2009, 06:27:55 am »
The ever delightful Shiver from over at the UQMF is a master of NetMelee. For quite some time, he has tirelessly toiled away at a Balance Mod for UQM. Why would he do such a thing? Well, according to Shiver himself:

"The balance mod could also be described as "Shiver's Bells and Whistles Mod" at this point because, holy crap, just take a look at the change log. Nevertheless, the focus of this project was to make every ship in the entire melee line-up useful. In order to accomplish this, the various ships were strengthened or weakened so that every last one of them would be moderately effective at a high level of play. This mod is not suited for Star Control's main game, nor melee against the cyborg. Game balance may be the goal of the project, but many adjustments have been made for the sake of aesthetics or continuity. This mod is probably not 100% perfect as of yet, though I am positive that game balance is better than in default Star Control 2. Expect a 1.01 release at some point in the future."

The Mod itself consists of some .dlls, an effects zip and a windows .exe. Later on a mac version will be published as well. The location of these files and instructions on how to use them can be found on the Ultronomicon under Installation Instructions. You should also check out the Change Log and the Gameplay Tips. Shivers own topic announcing the release of this mod can be found here.

This mod is the first major mod of UQM, and Shivers dedication to the NetMelee community is impressive. If you haven't tried NetMelee before, now would certainly be the time to do so.

In related news, those who wish to play vanilla melee can do so on Saturday, it's time for the March NetMelee Tournament!

Great news, not that I didn't know that already. By the way, it's not the first major mod of UQM, EP's Crazy Mod is.
Most stupid thread ever... never mind, this one is even worse!

Kudos to you, Shiver.  You saw a problem and you solved it.  Great job!

Looks intriguing. I might have to give it a go. Though I will disobey Shiver's explicit instructions and have a go against the AI, and then complain about how bad the AI is with the modified ships.

I offered to host a Crazy Mod tournament as soon as EP released a version that didn't crash, but he didn't take me up on that. He's lost interest in Star Control lately. It's been a long time since he first arrived though, so I don't really blame him.

Off the top of my head, I know that Supox is crap because it's always been crap and Chenjesu is crap because I didn't bother to teach it how to use the new shrapnel very well. Feel free to call me out on any other terrible AI behavior.

People like you and I probably shouldn't be talking about how long others have been here. Next thing you know Eth will be calling people old.

Lets hope this revitalises the tournaments as well, I assume you're going to start running Balance Mod tournaments?

I do. The old brick red fighter paint always bothered me.
