New here, just want to say hello from Gaia Betelgeuse ..^^
« on: December 18, 2008, 03:29:51 pm »
Hello all,

after many years I was stunned, that such a vibrant Starcon community exists ! GREAT ... StarconI and II were one of the best games I ever played, and yes, my both sons (16+23) play them alike ! They love it ! The story dense, the threads twingled, the races individually lovely - except the dynarri.. Ok, enough said, just tell me, where to buy the next game ? :)

I wouldn't play Star Control 3.
It wasn't made by the same people and you will be dissapointed by it if you play it.
It doesn't deserve to be a star control sequal.
I'm watching you. I always do. I know your every step. Awake or asleep. I look into your dreams. I see all your emotions, your love, your sorrow, everything around you. I feel your pain and endure it. I can cast the magic of the worlds and destroy everything you see.
This is a burden, and a gift.

Greetings! SC3 wasn't as balanced as SC2 was. Many of the sc3 ships would clobber the sc2 ones. SC3 did answer several SC2 mysteries, but I don't think its canon if SC gets revived by its original creators. I thought it was still a fun game to play and the melee seemed to be better. However I really REALLY did not like the SC3 character screens, which were puppets in front of a diorama instead of drawn animated characters. The puppets, the way they did it, didnt look like the characters to me. Its what drove me into modeling SC characters in 3D.

I found the travel boring.
It took ages to get fuel.
There was no planet travel.
There was a lack of variety in the ships.
The aliens were boring.
Quasi-space travel was not the same.
The precursors weren't very good.
The Datplak thingy-ma-bobs were annoying.
The Mycon and the Vux were annoying.
The Pkunk and the Chmmr were annoying.

I liked those "nothingness of mind" guys.  The Exquivian? Xchaggers?  I can't remember.

Welcome to the community.  It's great that your sons also enjoy Star Control.  I remember my dad playing Star Control 1 on his DOS PC when I was a kid and I watched him play the combat portions of the game.  Eventually, me and my brothers started to play it and we got hooked.  Since then, we started to play other games and deep down inside, we never forgot about Star Control.

Did you get a chance to write an e-mail to Alex Ness showing support for a new Star Control game?

Regarding that "next game", I wouldn't play it at all.  I played it and I regretted it.  The characters were puppets with limited motion and colours, unbalanced ships, really bad voice acting and I refuse to believe that the Precursors are a bunch of hippo-like things.  It's non-canon, and even TFB don't consider it canon.  TFB had nothing to do with that game.  After making SC2, Accolade wanted them to make another right away after working overtime just to wrap up SC2, so they chose Legend to do it without TFB's help.  Here's a video of some gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKJH9myI05A

It just doesn't make the Star Control Universe look good that's all.

I've been modeling star control ships and characters so long, I almost forgot how it started. I totally hated the puppets in SC3. I thought the characters could've been better brought to life as CG 3D. Also the intro animation for SC3 was really bad. The eyeballs were embarassingly animated. Instead of the eyes rotating individually, one eye would pop out of the eye socket while the opposite would fall deeper in the eye socket. basicly I thought "I could do better than that" and been at it ever since, as free time allowed it.

Hi, thanks for the warm welcome.
I had played and do play so many games ... but Starcon is and was always special to me. I often scratched my head, thinking "why the heck is THIS game so special to you ..?" Answer is:
A very thrilling and compelling storyline ( I will never forget the exploding universe in SC1 - I mined too long and visited too many planets until evil took over the universe ... lol .
Detailled game design, you could land on planets ( can you believe, that the game design forum for "Jumpgate" is still judging planet landings as "too complex" ... ^^
Lovely crafted alien races, each with its very special habits and behaviours. Hehe .. I never forget my first Spathi encounter in SC2 ....

Have a Merry Christmas !

SC1 or SC2
« Reply #12 on: December 24, 2008, 04:00:47 pm »
Hi, no I think this collapsing universe was SC1  -  I remember, that the planet Earth was abandoned and you could find some old notes on the surface of the planet. In SC2 Earth was under this slave shield.
Maybe I am mixing up with another game "Starflight" which was a little earlier on the market, I am not sure.
Merry Christmas to all StarCon Fans ^^

Yeah, that doesn't sound like SC1 at all.  Must be Starflight, I guess.
