I've had the idea floating around for awhile, I was reminded by a comment recently about this very idea. So I figure why not start planning something, to that end I'm going to start planning a Star Control convention. Who's to say if anything will come of it but it all starts with planning.
I figure melee contests for sure, maybe see about getting TFB to make an appearance? have a petition for another SC game that would be signed in person by attendees. Have SC model contests who knows what we could come up with.
Now it's your turn, who out there would be interested in helping to plan such an event? have thoughts on where it should be held? what kinds of things we could do? let's hear them all, or if you simply think I'm crazy by all means let me know

  It should totally be in Portland, Oregon.  We could have it at any number of neat venues.  Of course, it should be called "StarCon."  Or perhaps "Ur-Con?"  No, "StarCon" is better.

I think it'd be of course less ambitious, but more achievable to carve out a booth at a Gen Con or Comic Con or my basement.  Wait, what?

Yeh, my original name was StarCon. Well west coast works better for me, and it's closer to TFB which would be better if we intend to bring them in on it. Perhaps we could get a rep from a certain game company that starts with an A to come so we can slap them around , I mean convince them how badly we want another game.

Seriously though, there's a lot that goes into these conventions, even if you're not going "Star-trek convention"-big. Ofcourse I haven't personally attended any convention besides New Wine so my experience with this sort of thing is a little limited.

There should definitely be food. Cosplaying should probably be encouraged (it's lots of fun to look at the silly stuff people make up) maybe even get some guy in a ZEX costume for the crazed slash fiction fans to pounce, there should be a bunch of machines set up with SuperMelee and dual controllers (I vote PS2 controllers as they have the neat 'individual button' approach instead of those dreadful d-pads) and maybe rent out a few stalls for people to trade/sell Starcontrol Merch.

Did I miss anything so far?

  The thing to do is start planning, then try to gauge reactions.  Try to estimate how many people will show up.  That will determine the size of the venue needed.  We'd need Guests of Honor, some speakers (hopefully mostly people involved in the original games and/or UQM).  Some of the costs could (hopefully) be defrayed with t-shirt sales and such.  I dunno.  I've never organized something like this.

lol there can never be to much,I'm also planning a computer lan event for my home town, and there's also PNF I'm supposed to be working on and the sins mod oh and work and keeping my house organized, and keeping the girlfriend happy and fixing everybody's computer around here and so and so on....

If you're going to hold StarCon on the West Coast, then would you kindly postpone it until 2010 or so?  I'll need to wait until I can board an airplane and pay for the ticket myself, since I live on the other side of the country. 

Also, a couple of years might be enough time for me to confer with my fellow deviants so that we can all dress as Shofixti (and the Captain and possibly Talana) and mob ZEX!Eth.
