Ahm going on vacaion!
« on: June 22, 2008, 12:48:03 am »
So I'm going on vacation. I've one week of work left, and then we're heading off on an adventure. Were are we going? Well, we'll be driving around Scandinavia for 10 to 14 days, spending most of it in Norway. Have a look at our route map:

We'll be in Norway for four days, and one day at most other places. Or at least that's the plan, we've decided to not set it in stone. If something catches our fancy, we can stay an extra day.

Now in order to traverse approximately 3000 km, we'll need a trusty steed indeed. After considering our options, and weighing fuel efficiency versus comfortability, we've opted1 for the following beauty (It's the four door version in the back, ours isn't red though).

1And when I say opted I mean that's the in-laws car that we borrowed while they are on vacation.

So after a long day of driving (longest day trip is ten hour) we'll need to really relax and stretch our legs out, won't we? Indeed, which is why we've gotten this beauty (Female not included apparently).

It's big enough to be comfortable in, and very water proof. Once we've put it up, it'll be time to prepare some delicious food on this:

And maybe a dash of this

And you know what the best part of this is going to be? Almost two weeks without computers, television, or anything similar. We'll read, spend time together and enjoy the sights. In Sweden, Kiruna apparently has guided tours through one of the largest mines in Scandinavia. In Norway Narvik and Tromsö are both really beautiful scenic places. It'll be good to relax, and wind down. After this I've two more weeks of work, and then two more weeks of vacation. But we'll spend those with family and friends instead of cruising the world.

Sounds great, Luki.  I'm going on vacation myself in a few hours.  Camping on the Oregon coast.  Very scenic, very cold, very wet.  Yum.

A fellow camper, that's great! How long will you be gone for?

Also, I suppose this can be the vacation thread, where is everyone going?

We'll be gone for six days, unless we decide to come home early.

Look it up in the dictionary, it's right by ahm. And keep working on that community spirit Red, I sense you're getting there.

Come through Kuusamo on your trip north =D

Sorry buddy, that's a bit hard. We'll be driving from Narvik to Rovaniemi, and from Rovaniemi to joensuu. Those are pretty much the two longest sets of the journey, and detouring around Kuusamo would add a few more hours on the trip.

We'll be gone for six days, unless we decide to come home early.

Well enjoy yourself!

The trip is kind of an experiment as well. Me and my girlfriends have been going out for 4½ years now, and things are going quite well. We've taken vacations together before, but always in hotels and suchlike. Sleeping in a tent and eating canned food will test our mettle a bit more.

That's the other part of the test, can all five of them get along in one tent? I'm not averse to catfights per se, but in the long run I'd prefer peaceful coexistence.

Not that it matters, because from the 25. onward I will be taking my own month-long trip to south finland: via Oulu to Kokkola, from where I will proceed to Jyväskylä, then Kuopio and finally Helsinki, where I will be for about a month, before returning to Kuusamo via Tampere.

After actually reading your post, I've realized that the hot chick next to the tent isn't your girlfriend. So I've deleted the post where I drool over how hot she is without being so disgusting as to motivate you to kick my arse.

Um, so. What's up in those fiddly bits in Northern Norway? Is it all frozen over at this time of year? It looks so wonderfully fjordy. Make sure you post some pictures and shit when you're done.

Just got back from the coast.  The vacation was generally lovely.  The weather was insanely good for the Oregon coast, sunny almost every day, and never rained.  Henry fell down and gashed his head and had to go the the hospital, and we went through two propane stoves and had to buy another one, but things were quite nice overall.  I got some great pictures of the kids, which I'll upload later.
