IRC chat with Toys for Bob on 2007-06-13
« on: May 17, 2007, 08:15:49 am »
Those of you who visit the UQM forum or the Ultronomicon may have seen the occasional reference to the Words of Wisdom uttered by the Creators of Star Control in past IRC chats.
It is time to add another chapter. On Wednesday the 13th of June at 14.00 PT (that's 21.00 UTC), a delegation from Toys for Bob, including Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford themselves, will visit the IRC channel #uqm-tfb on Freenode (irc.freenode.net), and you're all invited.
A lucky few of you may even get the chance to play a game of SuperMelee against one of them. (Be sure to test your setup in advance.)

So, bring your best questions, and see you then.

UQM forum thread here.

Very odd that you can only create a poll... course the news and updates section may have different restrictions. Thanks for the head's up as well!  ;D ;D ;D

Note that new topics (and polls!) on this board end up on the PNF news page.

Good to know meep, even though the topic is already full of good (and not so good) questions. I'm sure they'll be enough, it will certainly bee interesting.

If nothing else, maybe Scott should post a news item on the lines of "SCDB forumgoers considering byout, trying to contact missing administrator". That might attract Chads atttention. Probably not, but it might be worth a try.

May I request some example of extremely good/extremely bad questions?
I already have an idea...
The Best Question: Do Star Control beings have souls, at least some of them? Do they reincarnate?
The Worst Question: WHAT THE HECK DID YOU DO TO THE UTWIG VOICE?!!!

Obviously they do.  See the Pkunk.

I know the answer to that one, too.

Obviously they do.  See the Pkunk.
The Pkunk are a single race in a multitude of species, and they don't have to have souls to "reincarnate" their ships and come again to life.
The Arilou would have been a better example, but they are extradimensional, so they may obey other rules.

Hey, it's not for me, it's to help everyone decide how good or bad each question is.
Plus, nobody said that I have to be able to request them. Even if I may not request them, you may post them.
And, after all, I requested them without any permission, and I don't foresee any repercussions.

Which is currently being done in the relevant topic meep linked to.

That doesn't necessarily mean I will.

No, you requested permission to request some examples of good/bad question. Had you requested the questions themselves, you would have asked "I request some examples of ...", rather than "May I request some examples of..." Since you were quoting me, the logical conclusion is that you were requesting my permission to request examples. I declined to give such permission.

You mean that you haven't read this post? (the first line is what interests you).
Ah, and on SCDB you should say "Meep", not "meep". because his nickname here is capitalized.

"May I request" is generally taken to mean "I request" in a more polite form (usually used when you are sure that your request will be denied).

I'm unsure of the relevance of your quote. How does the fact that you intend to spam the forum have anything to do with where this discussion is takign place. Spam is usually considered to loads of crap, discussing which questions should be asked hardly qualifies.

I fail to see the relevance of this. If meep is unhappy with how I spell his name, I'm sure he'll let me know. Meanwhile, if you bothered to look up the actual rules of the SCDB, I don't think you will find the rule "You must use proper capitalization i neveryone's name".

Is generally taken and is is not necessarily the same. Eerily well used though, since your request was denied

By the way, what's the point of this little, umm... how should I call it, debate?
