I am replaying SC2:UQM : Time Limit???
« on: April 25, 2003, 12:23:56 am »
I was wondering, is there a time limit before the game will end if you don't find the Sa-Matra???  I forget.  I was hoping I would just waste my lunch hours cruising the galaxy and explore everything I never did when I first played the game like 10 years ago.  So, do I NEED to win the game by some date before something bad happens???  If so, is there a way to turn that off or change it in the UQM code???

Yes, there is a time limit.

Eventually the Kohr-Ah start winning the doctrinal war.  At that point the Kzer-Za stand back and let them wipe out all sentient life.  They come to Sol last -- up until they arrive at Sol it is still possible to win the game.

I was once in the Star Base exactly in the moment when Kohr-Ah conquered it.

I forgot what they said.

Is there some date that I need to beat it by?  Or does some timer go off when I meet one of the races?  When I played this first, I don't think the Kohr-Ah destroyed any races, but I could be wrong.  It would be one heck of an improvement if there was some switch to run UQM that would turn off time from running.  Maybe there is and I haven't seen it???

Thanks for the QUICK replies!  I couldn't believe people already replied to this!

I think it's date bound. You have until early 2159 to beat it, unless the Utwig & Supox help (SPOILER??) Then you have another year or so.

So, if you talk to those guys eventually they will slow the war and you get an extra year to explore?  Hmmm...

I would love to explain completely, but that would be *spoiling* the game for you.

I checked, and the thing that gives you extra time, well you have to do it to finish the game...

I somewhat remember that part about needing more time...  It is too bad there's no time-freeze option in UQM to let you explore each star system.  I never had ANY time to really look at many deep into Kohr-Ah and Ur-Quan territorry.

I spent a bit of time this weekend looking at two computer stores hoping I'd find a $9.99 edition of the Star Control Trilogy.  I'm surprised I couldn't find it on the web either...

Exploring the entire SC2 starmap would probably make for an effective way to break up your workday.  The drawback would be that you may find all the non-essential worlds to be incredibly boring.  Occasionally you'll come across high-RU worlds (the highest of which are indicated in the Resourse Guide), but if you don't have to go there to finish the game, the programmers probably didn't spend more than a few seconds in creating the world or system.  I guess if you're willing to put up with the occasional empty Super-Dense World, finding the occasional Treasure World will be worthwhile.

However, for those that don't already know where everything in the game is, exploring is indeed really cool.  I remember that when I first played the game (and after I realized, at the hands of the Kohr-Ah, that I should save very often), I discovered a fair amount of stuff within range of Sol just by exploring myself, without getting tipped off first.

By the way, if you want more time, BUY MORE THRUSTERS.  If I remember correctly, the first time I went through the game I ran out of time because I didn't improve the speed of my colony ship until late in the game.  Buying more thrusters also allows you to dodge and outrun hostile ships that try to track you down in real space or hyperspace.

Actually, I belive that every system besides "quest" systems are generated totally randomly.  The same seed is used each time, so the worlds are the same, but it is done with random generation.  Interesting, huh?

yeah, fascinating...

I think they DID put a little extra effort in the star-systems very near to SOL (reality factor) but I'm not sure...

yeah, i think everything is random, except some systems (to make it more varied). But i still can remember one day, when i explored lotsa systems near sol (i didnt have much fuel, i needed RU-s so why not explore some bit near the sol system?) and... i NEVER found biologicals! (okay, maybe one, or two times?) So if you need BIO-s, go to the upper right (i thought it was upper right) corner, there are more biologicals...
I also found the quest for new lifeforms very exciting, (i actually had a piece of paper where i drawwed every creature i found..)

So if you want a new quest, just fly around, trying to find as much Biologics as possible...

Also its cool to search for beautiful colored planets (not rainbow ones, hehe. I remember that i found the grey-yellow ones very cool) and then make a screenshot of em :)

Time for a starmap addon, wich gives you a few nice quests, and mayor wicked quest-items.

Not to sound too *smart*, but it is a 10 year old game with a very complete hint/cheat guide and some pretty hard-core followers out *there*  :P
