Fight it, Sedodes, fight it! Or you'll end up a grinning idiot, silently mouthing the words, "Yes, dear," and driving a minivan... just... like... MEEEEEEEEE!!
Funny story, actually...
I'd never really been able to "be myself" in previous relationships, and when I'd get to a certain point of changing myself I'd snap back like a rubberband and either dump the woman or frustrate her with my return of "broken habits" and she'd dump me. When I began to date the woman I'm with now I mentioned this and she said that if she caught me compromising myself she'd probably dump me because she enjoyed my personality. I warned her that yes, it's funny and cute at first, but then it gets annoying after a few months...
And it has. And she will look at me with exasperation on her face during times when I just won't stop wearing my ignorant republican xenophobic American mask and say, "You know you're a dork and I love you for it, right?"
We're more about "encouraging" and "directing" each other instead of "controlling" each other, and we only support change in each other if it's a change the person initiates (I didn't hound her about quitting smoking [though I'm allergic to nicotine] until she mentioned wanting to quit). I will readily admit that she's the decision maker and "boss" in our relationship -- which we both prefer -- but she has no problem letting me take the reigns when I want to be assertive. It's a very fluid "power sharing" format resulting from us paying no attention to traditional gender roles and viewing each other as equals and it works wonderfully. We talk for at
LEAST an hour per day and spend roughly 48 hours per week together and have not once raised our voices at each other or abruptly ended a conversation, and while we have disagreements, we talk through them until we find common ground and in VERY rare cases have agreed to disagree.
She's sapped all of your vital bodily fluids! Your masculine energy!
Trust me, Eth... she can sap my masculine fluids all she wants. I've got more than I know what to do with and rather enjoy her techniques
