News! Late but here!

Ahh, vague omens and mysterious portents. Tangled webs of fate intertwined with the branches of destiny, blown by the capricious winds of happenstance. News, news....uh, actually there is some news!

News! Late but here!

Post by Scott Irving »

So this news deserves a proper post with all the details but alas I'm short for time these days so this will have to suffice for now.

In case you missed it, StarDock shared a gameplay teaser of their new Star Control Game Titled "Origins"
You can view the clip on the youtubes at - https://youtu.be/K6ntg47q_cM

There was a Balance Mod Tournament.. um yesterday that I failed to get a news post up about! sorry folks :(
Apparently there was 5 players and a few straglers that showed up later.

This news going back to September, yikes again I'm behind the times on these, Tiberian Released part III of the Eternal Doctrine!
View the topic with link to Part 3 at http://www.star-control.com/community/v ... f=9&t=1202

That's all for now, I'll try to get back on later this week and update our new "SC: Origins" section with links to various previews of the new game.

I think that the game looks great so far. I want to play it.

As far as continuing on with the canon story... I think that has to be left to the fans. We're gonna have to do it.

But it seems like it is really hard to develop a game. There was so much interest and excitement with Project 6014, but that has died. Is it just that the coding is too labor intensive?

Forgive my ignorance, but would it be a lot easier to get a game engine that is designed to be easy, and design a star-control sequel in that? I mean, certainly even Toys for Bob wouldn't go back to the same game engine to make a sequel. I wouldn't care if the graphics weren't that great. Does anybody else care about that for a fan made mod?

There's no-one to code, at least no-one who has the time. Without coders there's little hope. The issue with the community is that although everyone is supportive, no-one has the time to commit to such a large project. It's amazing P6014 even got as far as it did. And with the fan base getting smaller, as very few new people join, we're unlikely to get any new coders. I've kind of given up on the idea that we'll ever see a full fan made game.

P6014 was also at various times poorly-managed, or managed by people who lacked vision and exhibited shockingly-poor grasp of canon**, which was difficult to work with and that is why some (perhaps more than just "some") drifted away. There was a time when I hesitated to say that, but enough time has passed for an honest summation like this to be publicised, I think.

Or maybe that's part of the same underlying problem: good management takes time too, and the people who could have directed the project well lacked the time.

**And if anyone wants to jump out and zing me go ahead, I don't care. But it isn't necessary; I haven't named you.

For me it was

1) scope creep (story outline was many, many times bigger than SC2 in the end),

2) resolving mysteries in ways that didn't gel with existing canon (as Zeracles mentioned above),

3) storylines that were too linear - multiple instances would take over the plot and block everything else

4) Advancement seemed a bit arbitrary and kinda Monty-Haul (as in, reward disproportional to effort. Show up, get stuff)

It's been a long while since I played P6014, can you remind me what these were?

The Orz stuff seemed a bit off. And the Lurg seemed kind of too widespread to have evaded notice of both 'quan stripes. You'd think they'd have both noticed, prioritized them, and then gone back to what they were doing.

Despite Humans flying around in a Precursor service vehicle converted to a battleship, neither Ur-Quan faction is willing to shift focus to eliminate the threat to Ur-Quan dominance during the ritual doctrinal conflict....

I've never played P6014.... I wanted to wait for a final release, or at least a "complete" testversion, but it seems I've waited too long....

I didn't mean during SC2. They were supposed to have been lurking for a loooong time.

I didn't like the Lurg arc either, it didn't fit. Anyway, our newest member is Wombat140, who as far as I know has not posted yet. From what he tells me (here), it apparently takes a whole week to register on this forum. I didn't want to start a new thread about this and it seems to kinda fit in this one, being about late news.

While there is a certain tacky charm that comes with a forum on which the mods aren't exactly on the ball (slow to approve new registrations, zap spam and update news), can we do better than this? I don't mean to criticise, but if the mods here are busy with real life business, maybe they could do with some help. There are members who could be trusted with the responsibility. Eth and Luki were the best but apparently we don't deserve them.

And if anyone has a tip for Wombat with his display query on the page I linked to, he might like to hear it.
