As a commercial endeavor, I think they need to go as wide as they can. As a fan of specific genre, I hope they stay as close to original formula as possible.

If there is a first peron perspective element to the game my view is it could be limited, such as telling key story points like exploring Unzervalt precursor factory, or the Luna moonbase, the Chenjesu orbital satellite and also solving puzzles, such as needing some devices found elsewhere to use/explore/solve the task (keeping it in canon with the SC2 storyline).

I think any reboot must keep to the basics of the game (exploration, diplomacy and the SuperMelee) - without that it wouldn't be Star Control.
The Ultron tells me I should wear my Mask of Toys for Bob Appreciation when playing Star Control 2.

You know, this type of first-person could work - lander sequences (in the vehicle) and ruins exploration (on foot) but I think that it would require WAY too much investment, like having to make 3 totally distinct games in 1; engine, graphics and UI different for each...

You may be right, but I was thinking more of a multiplayer arena. Maybe as a spin off game.

I wouldn't want Stardock to overload itself and make a crappy game with too many features to do any of them well.

Aww jeez...

I was just reading what a sexist creep Brad Wardell is, so I decided to yank all the Stardock games I was mildly interested in off my steam wishlist, but then I see they're working on Star Control???

Man I hate when I want to boycott a company over politics and they're making something I actually care about. Yuck.
