SC2 ships in STA melee

Post by PatronGOP »

Do to a slight developmental slowdown (caused by Dan having a real life) I've decided to have some fun by creating SC2 ships in Space Taxi Adventure. These won't appear in the main game, but I might leave them as an option for the melee. Or maybe make them unlock-able or some such.

Faith or Balance?

Post by PatronGOP »

Despite similarities in look and feel, there are some major differences between SC2 Melee and STA Melee. Some are global engine based elements such as collision handling. Others are more design based. The most glaring being balance. SC2 ships were decidedly and deliberately unbalanced. STA ships are constantly re-balanced to give any ship a legit chance to take down any other ship (or at least that is the goal).

So here is the question. Would you prefer the SC2 ships that I am adding to be recreated as faithfully as is possible? Or would you like to see them re-balanced?

If I do re-balance them it won't be anything glaring like nerfing the crew of the Dreadnaught. It will be some changes to functionality. for example:

I could design the Earthlings nuke to explode on it's nearest pass to the target ship and inflict damage based on that distance (like an actual nuclear weapon). This alone would dramatically increase the fighting effectiveness of the ship by forcing the opponent to avoid an area instead of just the missile.

Another example would be adding some "stupid" to the Kzer-Za fighters so their flight path is somewhat randomized and they do not always hit.

First of all, I'd like to just say that I think it's cool that you posted your game here! I love these sc2 spinoffs and I will probably try this game (still a demo or so?) today if I get the time.

Personally, I would be very interested to see any other take on the current SC2 ships, maybe even new abilities if you feel old ones are due for a change!
As for balance, it is very relevant whether or not you talk about balance vs the computer or vs other people. Just to take an example, you bring up nerfing Kzer-Za fighters, but as I have understood from lurking here for a while and reading posts from some of the better pvp sc2 players (Shiver comes to mind), Kzer-Za is considered a pretty trashy ship already.
Sure you can decimate computer opponents with ease using it, but it is fairly bad against human opponents I believe.

Anyway the bottom line is that my vote goes for remaking as much as you want. Go crazy! If we want to play with the original sc2 ships we can always just boot up sc2.

Yes sir. The demo download is available here:

The demo runs melee mode only at this point. When I have more SC2 ships done I will update the DL.
Thank you for your feedback. Balancing PVP is something that I am very much interested in and where feedback from these forums could be invaluable.

Thanks in advance for playing. Please give feedback, we take it seriously.

You may want to look at the Netmelee Improvement mod linked in my signature. Shiver originally developed that over the course of several years to balance SC2 for PvP netmelee, and it's pretty refined at this point.

I can't seem to start the game. Nothing happens when I click the start button even after adding ships to both sides.

EDIT: Just checked it out and is working fine. You should have fleets on both sides of the screen. Try hitting the "Go Rando" button on the left and the "Go Rando" button on the right. Then hit start. The only way it should be dumping back out to the start screen is if one of the fleets is empty.

It is completely unresponsive when I press the Start button. Yes there are ships in both fleets. I have tried exactly what you wrote and tons of other stuff too. There also isn't any music and I can't access the controls menu. One peek at the console.txt file suggests that there are files missing or at least something that causes the game to not work.

I'd post the contents of the file but it is godawfully huge, is there a way to only display text if a box is clicked or something?

PM me the console log if you can. That should tell me everything I need to know. The missing files is probably the source of the issue. Zip file may have been corrupted during download or un-zipping.

The sound issue is just that the volume defaults to 0. You can adjust that in the game options menu. I will have a new (windows) demo up today (by 3pm EST).

Again, can't thank people enough for taking the time to run our little game.
