Sorry for the long radio silence, but believe it or not, am still actively chewing on making DQ - and have some cool stuff to share.
Firstly, DQ is going to merge with this project: http://www.quickfingers.net/category/the-core/
I have my hands on the source already, and am looking at what bits to include, and how to bring it all together. Exciting stuff.
Secondly, I've been playing with a planet landing prototype. After a lot of thought and chewing, I've come full circle into producing something essentially similar to SC2. First pass will be to create something that has identical set of features, e.g. procedural textures, simple resources scattered over the surface (to be scanned for), aliens etc.
From there I'll iterate new ideas and see what works and what doesn't. Plenty of ideas at any rate!
A first prototype can be looked at here:
This is basically just to test the camera and controls, and only implements up/down left/right. When/if you open the link, please click on the pane itself to make sure the unity player is in focus.http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19418682/TestPl ... lanet.html
You can see I've already played with placing things on the surface. Plenty of refinement required there.
I'm also thinking about things like fog-of-war, a more sophisticated planet shader with atmosphere.
Also, you'll note "The Core" has a planet landing feature. I think my plan for integrating this is probably to put this sort of higher-level planetary exploration as the first step, and where in Star Con, you'd hit a base and get a slab of text, possibly open it up to running a ground-level "mission" or similar.
Anyway, keen to know thoughts, as ever,
