One of the things I'm working on for the Star Control HD project is up-scaling the melee planets. I'm trying to vary the design so the planets are more than just different colors of the same planet. As I was making the planets, I thought this would make a good resource for people making mods,fan art, etc. For the most part, the planets themselves are really nothing more than lit 3D spheres with a custom texture. Anybody interested in these? If so, I can make a texture pack.

Some of these may have a little excessive bump mapping. It looks better when downsized to game size graphics. More to come...

It's amazing how well these fit in with the rest of the game. TimeWarp made a bunch of melee planets, but I don't think any of them looked this good, or fit in with the rest of Star Control. Glad to see this forging ahead.

Those planets look really nice :).
Though the emerald world is a bit off, I think it needs a bit more diamond-like/facetted look as the original.

I do hope, though, that you're going the right way about this. SC2's planets are entirely procedurally generated. Which means that each and everyone of them looks unique. This technique is easily upscalable to higher resolutions, though I'm no sure that it'd generate the same pristine look as you have with your planets. But it's worth looking into, I think :)

The only two worlds I don't really like are the Green World, because it isn't green enough, and the Rainbow World, because... I don't know, really- I guess I just kind of imagined it being a lot smoother instead of being allo rough and bumpy. But everything else is fantastic!

Heh. I went through several versions of the Emerald planet. I agree, I just couldn't find or make an Emerald planet texturethat looked Emerald like but still could pass for a planet.

No, the landing game still uses generated on the fly textures. I wish I could hit the level of quality to make them more realistic and varied, but that is beyond my programming reach. Still, they look sweet with higher resolutions.

Green world, I agree. Its already been changed. I do want it to look like it has an atmosphere though.
Rainbow world, I've gone back and forth on this. Right now, its staying.
Also not liking my low res crimson world. Ill change that later.
