The Turning - New Race X: Keetron

Post by kingschosen » Sat Oct 30, 2010 6:27 am

EDIT 1: Corrected spelling
EDIT 2: Added to the Keetron attributes to better encompass their being. Balanced the Chronicle a bit more.

Here are the main antagonist for my new creations... or protagonist... depends on how you look at it. Let me know what you think, and if you would like to hear more about Star Control: The Turning.

The Keetron are the mysterious force behind The Turning. They appeared in the Kessari Quadrant and began an assault on its inhabitants. The Arilou forewarned the League, and, ultimately, the League rushed to the aid of the battered Kessarians. To the surprise of the League, The Turning was much more battle-hardy and stalwart than expected. The Keetron, by themselves were a formidable opponent, but with the Keetron's combined power of the fellow members of The Turning, the League soon found themselves fighting a losing battle.

The Keetron brought with them from their homeworld their protectors – the Mala-Kasa; as well as their scouts – the Ttslatur. Strangely, their diplomacy seems to be on par with the League, and other races would gladly fight for the Keetron. The Keetron had no problem convincing the Ploxis, K’tang, Ysioglaf (Herald), Vyro-Ingo, and Golkli to join their cause. In an unprecedented act of cunning, the Keetron bombarded the Regothe, Bm'Mp, and the Clairconctlar while simultaneously reprogramming the Fo'lo'ti to fight by their side.

When the League joined forces with the Kessari Coalition the Keetron countered with a massive front at the Translocators that allowed travel between the Home Quadrant the Kessari Quadrant. The League and the Coalition slowly drove The Turning back and eventually forced a retreat. Unfortunately, the League and Coalition were unable to see that this was the Keetron's plan. While the League was distracted defending the Coalition, members of the Keetron incited a rebellion within the League's suppressed races: the Ur-Quan Kzer-Zah, Ilwrath, Mycon, and the VUX. The years of building resentment towards the League for not only their suppression, but also the release of the Thraddash from their suppression while the other remained. It took very little convincing from the Keetron. The four races became adamant allies of the Keetron and a massive force within The Turning. And, soon the League and the Coalition found themselves in a pincer between The Turning's two fronts.

Mysteriously, the Keetron also brought shadows of the past to fight and negate the League and the Coalition's efforts. The Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah follows the Keetron without question, and they returned to the Home Quadrant to fight along their fellow Ur-Quan brethren. The Chenjesu and Mmrnmhrm fight for The Turning with staunch dedication. This was, perhaps, the largest blow to the League's morale. Moreover, the Keetron thwarted any effort for diplomacy for the League with other Kessarian races by encasing the homeworlds in a slave shield that was eerily reminiscence of the Kzer-Zah's efforts during the Doctrinal War.

Physically a Keetron is a strange being. They are long organic creatures with many eyes and legs and they are entwined with living metal and surrounded by a crystalline casing. By all standards, they are a perfect sentience: ruthless, loving, charismatic, strong, cunning, noble, diplomatic, empathetic, apathetic, sympathetic, wise, and intelligent.

Their ship, the Chronicle, is unmatched on the battlefield. It supports a large crew and battery, moderate speed, and poor turning. It's primary weapon is the Nova Wave. A collection of plasma collects centrally above the Chronicle and is released as a wave. As intimating as the Nova Wave may be, the Chronicle's true power lies within its ability to slow down time in the direct vicinity of the ship. Once activated, time slows around the Chronicle affecting anything within its vicinity. The Chronicle is unaffected, and it is able to move at seemingly impossible speeds from the opponent's point of view. This allows the Keetron to dodge in coming projectiles or displace themselves for a tactical advantage. The amount of stress that the alternation of time places on the battery prevents the Chronicle from discharging a Plasma Wave while it is active.

Whether the Keetron and The Turning are evil is not known; but, what is known is that they want, above all things, to stop the League – at all costs.

So this is the elusive Keetron race. I have to say, they sound like impressive villains. I wouldn't want to go up against that thing in a fight.

Well, there is a lot more to them than just being a villain. Hopefully, I'll have the fortitude to flesh it out.

But yeah, do you think they seem a little powerful - from a balance perspective?

Can't say for sure without seeing it ingame, but my suspicion is that this thing would need to have a poor rate of fire and slow turning rate to be beatable with anything in vanilla UQM. Could be that some of your new ships would defeat it (or that I'm just plain wrong.)

The balance point might be prohibiting firing while the time is being manipulated as well as turn-rate nerfing, suggested by Oldlaptop.

Good call on that, guys. The turning jets should be nerfed... and, during time control the battery will be stopped, thus preventing any weapon discharge.

I'll change it up in a bit.
