The Orz dialogue rocks, in my view
I agree
Plus, Orz dialogue is really hard to write well.

You mean...
"Our charts show this as Androsynth space. Do you know what happened to them?"
Androsynth are not here. Orz are here.
You are not the same too much like Androsynth. You are *happy campers*.
Do you want to see our *surprising toys*? No!! Do Not!!
Androsynth are so silly. We do not *tell stories* a lot about them.
No more Androsynth stories.
You're right, it's close... I guess my tiny concern is that in that dialogue, it sounds like they're warning you to shut up or else... i.e., they're threatening you, with a side effect of helping you by telling you what not to do. I think in the new dialogue, the balance is shifted a little much from "threatening" to "helping/advising". Maybe. I'm not sure; I might be remembering it wrong.

Anyway, it's a really fine line. The Orz dialogue is generally fantastic.

I have a question: what are your plans for the voice acting? Will every alien have a voice?

(P.S. personally, I thought the voice of the Orz was handled much, much better in SC3. Any chance of taking inspiration from there?)

I would like to have voice acting in it. It will be a really big job though!

I have a personal preference to match the SC2 voices as much as possible, even the controversial ones like Orz and Utwig.

However this view may not be shared by everyone on the team.

I'm not saying... Well I'm not sure what I'm saying. I don't think the dialogue is bad, and I think the party joke was worked in quite well. It just sort of feels like the Orz is suddenly a bit too legible. Okay, maybe it has had some time to learn, but I dunno. Somehow it feels like the dialogue is a bit too clear, though I'm not sure what would be needed to do to obfuscate it. I suspect it's mostly down to my image of the orz not quite gelling with yours, and there's not much to be done about that eh?
Hmm... yeah, I kind of thought the Orz dialogue was a little weird at first, though I don't think it's so bad now. I guess it just felt a bit awkward with the Orz having a lot of new asterisked words that they didn't have before, but I'm starting to get used to it. There's still a few things, though, that the Orz are saying that just don't seem to fit with their character. ("*Appropriate*"? "*Vulcanize*"? "*Spread the wax*"?)

I didn't really like the Orz voice, but now I'm not sure if it was the actual voice that bugged me or the fact that they paused for two whole seconds between every word (It's probably a bit of both). I know the voice-actors had to conform to the speed of the text, but I'm thinking it might have been worse for the Orz because the Orz text is even slower because it's harder to read. (Or at least I think it's slower. I'd have to test it.)

As for the Utwig... Aren't they not even in the mod? You wouldn't have to voice-act them.
KYAAAAAIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE!

That was Cedric himself, leading from the front.
Lukipela wrote:I was wondering about that. I recall Eth and you being quite excited about this stuff and participating quite a bit, but you're not mentioned on the team (or did i miss it?). did you just hammer out broad guidelines and then let Cedric take it from there or did he cast you aside much like discarded dolls once puberty is a fact?
Well, Cedric had an outline before we did anything to it. Without revealing much of anything, Eth and I had some suggestions then, along with some input from me since. Not everyone on the team knows everyone else ;D-smf, Eth and I aren't the only ones omitted so I wasn't going to say anything :)

Yeah, a lot depends on who you have to write for; the guys I have are about as hard :|

Ok, got to the Syreen.

I quite like the one at the starbase. ;) Although... is it possible to have some sort of dialogue option for asking "what the heck?" without also insulting her?

Generally, I think the Syreen are the least well-developed part of this mod. I think the dialogue needs a lot of work... also, the art for the Syreen on the ship reminds me too much of porn. The original Syreen clothes, etc. is more akin to burlesque. I just think that the aesthetic is really off (plus the humourless face expression is also very porn star-ish).

Also, I found the actual Kohr-Ah! They're in the northern star systems of Orz space. Strange. Everything else is Slylandro.

Possible bug: I got Kohr-Ah music when I interrupted a Earth-Procyon freighter in hyperspace. Also, the voice of the Lurg hasn't been working lately, even when I closed the game & restarted it.

I'm new to the forums, simply because of the awsome-ness of this new mod. I am thoroughly pleased that something of this magnitude is on the horizon. Great work. If the project is still under construction within a year, I will be able to commit myself to voice acting. If eveyone has not been cast by then, I will be availible. I'll send a PM to you Cedric with contact information relevant to my profile.

As for my minute encounters with bugs..

When the Syreen commander at Gaia shifts her weight to her right, her lower body appears to be detached from her upper body. The art for this scene is still fantastic, however. The second bug I encountered was the music bug. This only happened once during my gameplay. The third and final bugs were easily mis-typed grammer mistakes. I believe that all of the ones that I discovered can be corrected pretty simply. From what I could remember, the grammer mistakes occurred in the dialogue with the Yehat, the Shofixti?, the Melnorme and the Chmmr. Overall the content of the dialogue was excellent!

As for the debate as to which game the characters voice overs are closest to, I cast my vote for Star Control II. The voice acting combined with the computer effects should be relativley simple to replicate. (I don't know to much about which programs can be helpful, however.)

Question:
Has anyone else had trouble with the demo running slower than the origianl game speed. There seemed to be delay in the FPS. It very well could be the computer I used, but it never hurts to be sure :D

With blank expressions, and wearing clothes? Man. What kind of porn are you watching? :P

The original Melee Syreen Captain animation is dressed in fishnet stockings, possibly topless and controlling the ship with stripper poles. Their ship looks like a dildo and is called the Penetrator. SC2 has a part where the lights go out and there's nothing but moaning. So yes, I tried to be just as playful in the design. I wouldn't call women wearing gold bikinis pornagraphic though.

Syreen had some last minute animation issues, which acount for the..."Porn face" and the graphical glitches. I had also hoped to include some extra dialog options that were also less offensive, but there wasn't enough time for them to program the extra lines so I had to modify an existing dialog tree. I hope to fix that in the update if we don't kill her off. We're still seeing fan reactions.

I'm aware of Burlesque. The homeworld Syreen model was based on Dita Von Teese a famous Burlesque model. I would argue the Syreen are based more on 1950s sci-fi and classic pin-up girls. I think I've even found the photo references the original artists used. I'd like to know if others think it went over the line like you think. Appreciate the feedback!

The Kohr-Ah are all around. Not just in one sector so be careful :)

The Starship captain is totally staying. She's gorgeous. She's kind of severe looking and I feel she is just intimidating enough. The dialogue could do with some tweaking, but I fully intend to have some harmless flirting in there. And yes, we do need to fix her mouth. :)-smf

I really disliked the "closeup" on Syreen dialogues. The switching zoom was annoying.
