Late to comment on this.. I'm a heretic, kinda like SC3, but i also played it before SC2 so my experience wasn't biased.

I liked the puppets, especially the orz spathi and arilou. Furthermore, the voice acting is incredible in SC3 and horrible in SC2 (I always have to explain to friends that I'm playing a game for adults instead of a kiddies game with all the squeaky voices in SC2).

I didn't mind SOME of the puppets but others were just ugly...

I preferred the sc2 voices because there were more highs and lows when you spoke with them. In sc3 most of them seemed monotone.

I've thought for a long time that SC3 isn't full of bad ideas - rather it's full of wasted potential, good ideas implemented really, really badly. In particular the 4X elements could have been very interesting - but the execution/implementation was so completely botched that what could have been some interesting genre fusion (which is what's really at the core of SC1 and SC2) became an utterly meaningless screen full of sliders.

So, if I understand this correctly...and I'm not entirely sure I do..what you are doing here is pulling a Star Trek style reboot of SC? where some event in the past created a parallel SC universe (The new game) while the classic games (The Ur-Quan continuity) are left alone to continue existing and being enjoyed... Right?

But if this is the case, then how is the new game Star Control, and not simply a Star Control like game?

What made Star Control, Star Control at least to me was not only the game mechanics, but also the story line, and rich background of the universe and races (which for a pretty basic strategy/combat game from the 90's (SC1) was amazingly detailed. To me star control was the adventure game aspect of the SC games and the rich universe created around them If all of that story/races/ (even the earthling cruiser?) is poofed out of existence by some mysterious incident...or at least sidelined in some way (into a different continuity) What is left that makes this new game a Star Control game I wonder.

Don't get me wrong I am as ridiculously excited about this as anyone else on these boards, But I guess i'm also a little disappointed too. I always wanted a new Star Control game to take us back to the universe seen in the first three games (and yes personally I see no continuity conflict between SC1-SC2 and SC3 and loved all three games ) I understand that for legal/ creative reasons, this is not easy to do and that the majority of gamers who have no idea what Star Control is, would probably enjoy a reboot far more than a sequel/prequel/interquel, but all the same for a long time fan of the SC universe like myself it might be hard to see the new game as Star Control. Still best of luck and I hope the game is amazing, then again you guys at Stardock have a perfect record in my book, so I'm sure it will be.

To earn the Star Control name the reboot at least might pin down some unalterable central elements that defines Star Control.

I think the existence of the Star Control organization, "Earthling" as a reference to humans and the influence of Precursor devices is the bare minimum requirement for a game to earn the name -- with the expressed intent not to alter Ur-Quan timeline canon (check). From there on, I guess any extra content, visual and narrative style is okay as long as they don't suck.

Yes, this is my question too. Is it a reboot?
In any case, please, Frogboy, do what it takes to make the game $. Secondary considerations are to respect canon while revealing new things. This is sort of a tightrope walk. And you know that you can't please all fans all the time. Just do everything perfectly and fast and read everyone's mind and predict the future. :)

It is, according to Frogboy's first couple posts. The game itself is starting in 2112 with mankind's initial alien contact, but the lore/story goes back 250K years ago.

Kind of surprised you guys are going with a complete alien roster overhaul. Would have liked to seen some of the species from SC2 make an appearance, the Spathi in particular, but I can understand your reasoning.

My hope for the adventure portion of the game would be to have more than one way to beat the game, with the endings changing accordingly. Make one path the 'canon' path for the purposes of continuity in any possible sequels, but allow us to see how differently things can play out by making different choices. Opens up tons of humor/dialogue options with the various species depending on how you've dealt with them in the past.

A tall order, I know.

But it being a reboot, we can safely assume that the contact will not be with the Chenjesu, as outlined in SC1 and 2 background materials...right?

Thinking about it...something strike me as important...The psychology and or history of each race was somewhat reflected in their ship design. For example, the Spathi fitted their cautious and easily scared nature. This is something that needs to be reflected in any new SC installment.

Also, I am an avid fan of Criminal Minds and I learned about different personality disorder and psychological disorder...and, in turns out that it made me appreciate even more how some of the race's background shaped their personality (the Ur-Quans are a prime example of this). Clearly, they are psychopaths or sociopath. Utwig/Supox are also showing another human situation a depressive person with a benevolent helper who can't help him. My point is, there is a wide array of human behavior and emotions (and perhaps someone with a lot of creativity could come with some unique alien perspective (E.G. a race that multiple identity is a common trait)). Some races also clash by their political nature too: the socialist zoq-fot-pik versus the greedy capitalist Druuge or the pacifist Spathi vs the war monging Traddash.

Food for future discussion I guess :)!
