I guess the Orz are like the Mob... They don't like it when people ask too many questions. Namely, I started asking about the Androsynth (I was very anxious to meet them in game). Now the Orz are mad at me. I only realized this after about 5 more hours of playing. Now I'm getting ready for the Mycon trap with the Syreen, and I'm wondering: If the Orz are mad, can I make them allies still? All they do is attack, not leaving any room for apologies. I really don't want to start the game over again. I'm going into my last in-game year, and I'm hoping I can still win the game without their help.

Does anyone know how to get back into the Orz's good graces, and do I NEED them to win the game?

From what I remember, if they are angry, they are angry.
You most certainly do not need their help to win the game. There are a plenty of other good ships that can do the thing -- especially Spathi Eluders, Utwig Juggers and Pkunk Furies.
It is hard, but -- if you can win without Nemesis-class ships, you will emerge stronger. And will pwn most young players in Online Super-Melee. ;)
Remember to learn how to control fast and nimble ships. Zoq-Fot-Pik, Spathi, Pkunk and, in some cases, Supox will easily deal with a Mycon Pod if you have good control. The VUX are tougher, but still manageable. Juggers are important.

If you have to fight with a Nemesis, choose an Earthling Cruiser: their point-defense scares the artificial intelligence system away, and at least the Go-Go Squad will be kept on a leash. :P

So, I don't NEED to pick up the item from their home world, or their moon, or wherever it is? I've been hearing/reading about some item that you can obtain from them if you are their ally, probably something related to the precursors or some artifact. I'm not sure, this is my first playthrough... the pkunk are dead, the zok fot pik are dead, and now this...

I think you can still get the artifact by attacking them on that planet, but I'm not sure.

Even if you're able to get the artifact, it's still going to be very difficult to win the game at this point. Losing the Pkunk will definitely cost you a lot later on in the game, and the fact that you only have one year left is... unfortunately concerning...

But that's the beauty of the game in my opinion- the first time you ever play it, you have no idea what you're doing, and thus you make mistakes (sometimes really big ones) and you might not realize at the beginning of the game just how much your decisions can affect the path of the story. Typically, at the very end of the game, you're either in a losing position, or, if you're lucky, you can win by the edge of your teeth.

The next time you play the game, you'll be much more prepared, and you'll start figuring out just how to avoid some of situations you described and how to turn the tide in your favor. I wish you the best of luck, but don't be discouraged if you can't win the first time- I didn't. And remember to save often- if you can load a save file from before you angered the Orz, then that is exactly what you should do. If you can't, then you're going to have to pray really really really hard.

Thanks for stopping by, dochomie! Oh, and be sure you have the support of the Supox and Utwig. You can still win, but you need every single bit of help you can get.

Thanks for the advice, MyOtheHedgeFox and Dyandod. The fact that you are concerned about my predicament is funny to me.

I'm planing on finishing up all of the loose ends before taking out the precursor platform and going into the final battle. My current situation:
Pkunk: dead
ZFP: Dead
Orz: They want to *dance*
Allies: Spathi, Syreen, Shofixti, Arilou
Ultron: Still need the rosy sphere and the aqua helix, but the Ilwrath are currently attacking the Thraddash
Mycon: Planing an attack on them with the Syreen
I have only gotten the upgraded weapons and point defense from the Melnorme. Found 2 rainbow worlds.

This game is amazing, but boy did I have no idea what I was doing at first. If things get really bad, I'm going to just pretend My captain went through a time warp back to the beginning of the game (restart). The whole mission seems to be balanced on how fast you get the Arilou Portal spawning device. That was a godsend, and I only managed to pick it up on my third year or so... Stupid portal kept closing.

Hmm... OK, never mind. I don't think you can win. There's just too much that you haven't done yet that you need to do.

But hey, the second time's the charm! Basically the whole point of the game is that you can't dawdle at all. You don't have to rush through at 1359837650345 MPH but you always have to know what you're doing and where you're going. The Quasispace Portal is kind of a game-breaker for me... It gives you too much power, and I wish there were fewer portals or something...

Anyway, have fun the second time you play! You have a much better idea of what to do now, though from what you're saying I think there's still quite a bit that you haven't found out yet... That is, did you ever figure out anything about the Slylandro probes? And do you recognize what my "signature" is?

Well of course we're worried about you... the fate of a thousand worlds is in your hands!

And I see that you found the Shofixti. I didn't see that the first time around.

Oh, and another thing. You're about to lose one of your allies... (I won't say who)

Vindicator with point-defense installed works very well for this too. The hilarious thing is that the Orz would win against either of those if the AI would use marines...

This is correct. There is also an event that can occur late in the game that grants access to this and a wide assortment of other plot coupons. By the time this happens, unfortunately, it may well be too late.

I think I'm going to go home and call this playthrough a wash. I dawdled too much at the beginning, collecting way too many RU's but not having a whole lot to buy. Plus, when I went to visit the Pkunk, much of my time was spent fighting off/hiding from Ilwrath. Furthermore, I flew all the way to the Druuge planet, only to come back empty handed. The main focus of my early incursions was resurrecting the Shofixti, which I now realize was not nearly as important as the Ultron and Syreen missions, or the Chmrrm (?).

Oldlaptop, I am very intrigued by this late game "plot coupon" concept, but I'm not sure I should keep ploding along hoping that it will save me. And Dyandod, yes, I took care of those pesky probes as I was taking care of my business with the crashed Dreadnought power supply and the Arilou.

I'm really liking the community around here. I bought this game from GOG when they had the sale, and... it was like I fell into another world. Starflight was my previous favorite game of all time, but this one certainly has dethroned it. Thanks for the quick replies, and I'll be sure to heed your advice on all accounts.

So you got Star Control 2 from GOG? Just so you know, you can download SC2: The Ur-Quan Masters for free at sc2.sourceforge.net

The Ur-Quan Masters is basically an updated version of SC2, with remixed music, added voiceovers, and other miscellaneous additions. The voiceovers are pretty good, I think, though you have to get used to them (for instance, the Spathi and Zoq-Fot-Pik voices caught me off guard a little, but they grew on me... ;D-smf ) So be sure to check that out, and if you want to share this game with your friends, be sure to direct them to The Ur-Quan Masters so they don't have to pay.

As for the "plot coupon" thing... yeah, that's definitely a last resort thing that you should try to avoid at all costs. (But you can stick around this run-through just to see what it is, if you want)

I'm also impressed that you've already chosen SC2 to be your new favorite game of all time... Welcome to the club, mate! (You know, I think I might be the only user on this site who hasn't played StarFlight... I've got some work to do I guess)
