Differences between SC1 and SC2

Post by Mormont » Sat Mar 20, 2010 8:59 pm

Of course there's the really obvious stuff like less ships, worse graphics/sound, and the strategic mode instead of the adventure, but I'm referring to more subtle differences. Such as:
- The combat arena is smaller (a fusion bolt reaches over halfway across the screen!)
- The Umgah's cone is wider
- Ur-quan fighters crash into the planet
- The Chenjesu gets killed by the planet even more easily than in SC2

What else is there?

I think it might just be my version of Starcontrol 1 but the Androsynth in comet form pauses for a second when it turns which makes it VERY difficult to use.

How about "Star Control 1 needs a remake more than Star Control 2 does." And that's a fact.

In SC1, precursor artefacts are general things that boost a ship. In SC II, they are very specific objects that fulfil a certain task.

In SC1, you travel between separate worlds or stars with only one world. In SC II, there are solar systems with many planets.

The Eluder is called Discriminator in SC1

There are multiple versions of SC1 with some very different lineups.

In SC1 you could take the role of an unnamed commander, steering ships across the galaxy. In SC2 you're stuck with a single starship captain.
Hehe, that's what I said!

I see what you did there ;). Got a bit distracted this weekend but did make some progress. A report should be on it's way as soon as I get the time to, you know, write it.

And yeah, the Androsynth Blazer in SC1 was damn near unusable as it sort of flies in a square rather than a circle.

Okay, here's another one. In Star Control 1 you were given a level editor to write your own campaigns and share them with your friends. SC2 was a fixed experience.

Yeah, but SC1 had little, easily edited scenarios that all follow the same guideline. I'm sure that it would be a waste of time and resources for TFB to design some sort of friggin SC2 campaign editor. I'm not sure if the fan community are interested in making some such program

It'd certainly be interesting if you could script your own events in UQM. People would be able to enhance the story quite a bit and flesh out some of the races to their liking.
