Weird, but there is no image I could find of someone putting a file (as in tool) to a suit (an attire)
There is a void in the internet.... we must fill it.
Not I. My suit is in good condition and I'd like to keep it that way. If I had a suit too damaged to use, I'd be all over it.

You DID censor out some of less civil posts, as far as I remember.
In any case, he can't **demand** transfer of the domain, it's on first-to-grab basis. (In worst case it can go back to being a porn site...)
Neither can they file suits, as forums are not a monetary venture so are fair use, regardless of stated opinions.

EDIT
Weird, but there is no image I could find of someone putting a file (as in tool) to a suit (an attire)
Not to mention UQM is being put under a new domain since the stack.nl servers are shutting down soon.

I would stay tuned to urquanmasters.com or .net, maybe both.

Wait wait wait... Exactly how do they have the rights to "eliminate" this community? This is generally concerning although i might not be up to date with events.
Yes, that's all fine and dandy but WHEN GOTP?

The trademark owner of the US federal registered trademark "Star Control" is Stardock.
The have similar trademarks registered in the EU, and other major markets.
Furthermore they applied for the trademarks "UQM", "Ur-Quan Masters", Fwiffo, Chenjesu, Arilous, Spathi, ... and so on.

This alone gives them no legal standing to close these boards, but the threat of a high legal bill is often enough to shut down these communities...

As Krulle suggested, the danger is through Stardock's trademark claims. If they own the trademark to "Star Control" (as seems likely), they might be able to take this forum's domain name away. If they own the trademark to "Ur-Quan Masters" (as they are claiming), they might be able to do the same to the UQM forums, and block distribution of the open-source project. Their legal brief (page 54) requests that the court issue such an injunction.

They've also claimed trademarks on most of the alien races and other names in the game, and claim that this gives them the power to completely block anyone else from using them. I'm skeptical of those claims, but I'm also not a lawyer.

My biggest worry, actually, is that the administrators of this board may have been tricked into signing the same sort of underhanded license agreement that Stardock tried to get the UQM admins to sign. Contrary to how it was presented by Stardock, it actually gives very little protection from Stardock, but instead would concede the validity of Stardock's authority, making it much easier for them to make demands on the forum.

I would be very interested to know if the administrators of this community have been approached by Stardock, and if so, what the outcome was.

I swear, no sleazy, underhanded tactic is below them at this point. The whole situation only gets more troubling with each update.

Stardock CAN NOT claim domain names. These are on first-to-grab basis. All they can do is persuade the transfer of ownership, but only as a voluntary action, can't be forced. In addition, as long as the forums are not generating revenue under the disputed alias, again, no basis for ANY legal action against the site.

yes, thats reassuring, but I'm still paranoid... I know it doesnt work this way but the THEME of this forum is exactly what was trademarked or being fought over... Wait, does that even make sense? Also I originally thought the legal battle was OVER a few weeks ago but boy was i wrong

Nothing done here can be considered "infringing" on their rights, because we are not selling anything and no experience on the forums substitutes gaming experience. Closest are let's plays, and even those are legal.

That has not stopped big companies with deep pockets pulling down these things before. Like it or not, we are using trademarked terms and copyrighted imagery, and who owns those rights is exactly what is in dispute here. I doubt any of us here in this community would have the money, ability, and time necessary to stand and fight against a team of corporate lawyers trying to close us down. Hell, this appears to be the main thrust of Stardock's strategy against Paul and Fred, so what chance would we have? Fair use or not, it would cost a lot of money to get to judgment either way, and that's not something a tiny nonprofit forum generates in spades, if you see what I'm getting at.
