Favourite tunes?

Post by Bleeding Star » Mon Apr 19, 2010 12:56 pm

For me, one of the high points of Star control 2 was the music. I was shocked to hear such good music coming out of my shitty PC speaker, and I think some of the tunes were the best I've heard. I'm curious to know other people's favourite pieces of music, whether it be the music for the various alien races, victory ditties, or other in-game sounds.

As far as the in game music, my top 5 would have to be:

1) Mycon
2) Ur-Quan
3) Druuge
4) Arilou
5) Yehat

I love the mycon tune so much that I'll voluntarily sit there and listen to their nonsensical ramblings just to hear it to the end. The riff for the Ur-Quan music just suits them so well, practically reeks of dominance and oppression.

As for victory ditties:

1) Orz
2) Androsynth
3) Ur-Quan
4) Utwig
5) Chmmr

In particular, 1-3 are so catchy I often get them stuck in my head for days on end.

I havent' listened to the remixes yet (was planning to wait until they were completed) but I'm interested to hear your opinions on those too.

In the original game, my top 5 were:

1. Thraddash
2. Yehat
3. Spathi
4. Ur-Quan
5. Battle music

The Mycon probably just squeaked under at #6. The remixes are awesome all around, and since slots 4 and 5 are too hotly contested, I only have a top 3:

1. Ur-Quan
2. Thraddash
3. VUX

Seriously, if you've never given the Precursors a listen, you owe it to yourself to do so right away, those guys are incredible (and based on our recent discussion at the UQM forum, unlikely to finish the remainder of the remixes anytime soon, if ever).

As for music, I would say...

1. Hyperspace {Its quite obvious why}
2. Syreen {Not doing to bad learning the main bits on my keyboard}
3. Spathi {For its good use of strange instruments}
4. Slylandro {Again for its good use of stupid sound FX, Eric Berge sure knows his stuff}
5. Orbit {Because its pretty much the most mellow song in the game}
Perpetual Bonus: 6. Supox {Love the big ass description in the instrument samples :)}

And as for victory ditty's...

1. Androsynth {Da da da, Da da, DA!}
2. Kohr-Ah {Because its fun making the captain play the song}
3. Supox {For its floweryness}
4. Zoq-Fot-Pic {Its happy, pleasant tune takes your attention away from the ensuing destruction and loss of life surrounding you}
5. Ilwrath {I don't know why...}

The Precursors might have over dramatized some songs, but thats all in the process of making them kick-ass catchy, seriously worth listening too.

Maybe I will have to, especially if they're never going to finish. It's interesting to see how different all your tastes are to mine (and therefore, how incredibly stupid you all must be). Though it's encouraging me to go back and have another listen to everything just to check.

sorry, I meant "whate the...how come nobody chose slylandro!" but then I noticed Nuclear did on a re-read.

Anyway, top 5:
1) Slylandro (how can you beat a song that has dogs barking as an intrument)
2) Druuge
3) Yehat
4) hyperspace
5) Quasipace

Honorable mentions to at least a dozen others. Hardly a dud in the whole game. I'd go further than the OP and say that perhaps it was the music that that was the best part of the game.

I’m pretty boring in this regard (and others too I suppose), but my favourite music was easily the Yehat and Kzer-Za tunes, closely followed by the Traddash. The remakes are great and you should definitely listen to them. The Kzer-Za tune needs a lot more time to build but becomes pretty impressive, and the Traddash tune is still nice.

Also, you’re a weird weird man for ranking the victory ditties. But since you ranked the Androsynth tune highly I feel compelled to point out that TheMisterCat made a full song out of that one, which is hosted right on our very own music page. That might interest you.
