Best of luck in your final battle, Captain. All of us here at the starbase and down on the surface are pulling for you. Make us proud, and set us free!

Incidentally, as an aside, this dialog from the Ur-Quan:
“There is something wrong here… something which makes my sheath retract and my talons ooze.
I sense the ugliness of a thousand evil thoughts…
…and I have located the source of these fetid emanations.
They come from aboard your vessel!
Is actually generic dialog from the first Ur-Quan you converse with after having acquired the Dnyarri. Only the part afterwards is unique dialog for the guardians of the Sa-Matra. If you were to converse with a Kohr-Ah, they would also have similar dialog acknowledging the Dnyarri aboard your vessel.

I recently discovered Ur-Quan Masters when I began doing some reminiscing about old games I used to play, and I felt like it was much more like a game I could embrace and embark on a quest to immerse myself in the gloriousness THAT IS Star Control..2?..or Ur-Quan?..or whatever it's called, the 3DO one with people talking and crap.

If he waits another couple of weeks, it will have been four and a half years...almost a full "five-year mission".

And quite possibly the only playthrough of the game ever to have the real-life duration exceed the in-game duration.

Thank you everyone so much for the encouragement. I hope I don’t let you down!

For an older game, I’ve noticed it still had a pretty good dialogue tree that took many possible various paths depending on your encounters and discoveries, including objects in your possession, your perceived status with other aliens, or even previous discussions with them or other aliens, and some of the dialogue (and alien behavior accordingly) is time-based.

Unlike many modern games that take you through a tunnel of dialogue that you can move back and forth through (M.E. looking at you pal) in a “choose your own adventure style”, I found that SC2/UQM kept it simple and subtle enough to seem natural and flowing, and it’s taken some painstaking efforts to try and capture all of it (plus lots of typing!) and I’m positive there’s a bunch I’ve missed.

Last time on “About to try to beat Star Control 2… no spoilers!”…

Yehat – “Greetings human friend! We know ye are about to be
attacking the Sa-Matra…
…and probably don’t like being interrupted, be we
have important news!…
The Rebellion is WON! We are VICTORIOUS!
We have pulled the Veep-Neep harpy Queen and her
cronies from the High Perch!
And better yet… we have found a new Queen!…
…A Queen who will unite the Clans in peace and
harmony as never before!
You will never guess who it is, Captain!
A PKUNK! Yes! It is TRUE!
They survived their absorption into our culture…
…and are now providing us with insights into
ourselves we never dreamed of!
We only THOUGHT we were being happy birds of prey!
We were fooling ourselves!
Our new Queen’s name is Braky Girdy the First!… and
her first command…
…was to rush here and bring ye these ships… Yehat
Terminators and Pkunk Furies.
Now, Captain, together we can attack the Sa-Matra!”

Captain’s Log – Supplemental:

Uh… yikes!

And now… the scintillating continuation of “About to try to beat Star Control 2… no spoilers!”…[/commercial break]
Captain’s Log – Apr 21, 2158 – Sa-Matra – Red Alert

There was no going back. The Sa-Matra was before us. We came upon the mighty beast in all of her grotesque glory. I’ve often pondered myself metaphorically pursuing this quote-unquote monster as Captain Ahab did Moby Dick, or even imagining myself slaying it like the shepherd-boy David hurling a small stone through the head of Philistine giant, Goliath… but I had always accepted them as mere analogies of swirling imaginations in my brain and not to be taken literally, but I could swear this Sa-Matra thing IS really actually some kind of crazy space monster, having both technological and biological properties:

It’s blue scaly skin has giant purple spots all over it like a lizard or fish while it has various small protrusions like green bumps or red spikes, along with larger ones too; some looking to serve as octopus-like limbs while the forward could serve either as claw or mouth, with a peculiar glowing sphere-like object from its opening, while a large green flame exits from the rear. Besides these energy areas, its center section is the only other part of its body that seems technological with a circular pattern of rectangular panels.

Like a crab in its shell the massive creature awaits us, protected by a rock-hard asteroid surrounding it with the exception of one small opening that has a powerful force field at its bottom section, which looks like the only weak spot, if you can call it that… it’s not exactly an unprotected section of the underbelly of a dragon that overlooked their gold plating protection, nor is it a crucial vulnerable tendon waiting to be sliced.

There must be a way past it, but only if I can find… wait! <BEEEP!>
Oh! It’s that damn Dnyarri buzzing me again. Wonder what he wants this time? Probably a big pat on the back for using his telepathic powers to lure the Ur-Quan outside the star system. I’d better wrap this up and see what the heck he wants. Zelnick out.

Captain’s Log – Apr 21, 2158 – Sa-Matra – Red Alert

Dnyarri – “Okay, human, you’ve made it past the Sa-Matra’s
…and now you can attack the vessel itself, so listen
The Sa-Matra is protected by a thick shell of fused
asteroids reinforced with a weak stasis field.
You will never break through that.
The only opening through the asteroid shield is
covered with a powerful force screen.
One touch of that screen, and you’re history,
To destroy the Sa-Matra, you will have to destroy
the shield generators embedded in the asteroid shell.
To drop the force screen, you will have to destroy
all eight of them.
When the screen is down, bring in your flagship,
move into the asteroid shell…
…and then press the Big Red Button on your
…that starts the detonation sequence.
Your escape pod will eject automatically. Just hope
you’re far enough away before that ship blows.
Ok, human, this is it! The last battle, your final
moment of triumph!
Don’t screw up.
And in case you’re wondering, I’m not going with you,
Captain. I’m staying on board.
Why, you ask?

Like before, we sent in the Arilou Skiff to scout out the competition. Unlike their scouting mission with the Ur-Quan though, this was going to be a one-trip mission. The Skiff warped in from a long distance from the mighty Sa-Matra, but it gave the little green guys a chance to survey the landscape and see the Sa-Matra for what it is… and what it is IS truly intimidating indeed! Its massive size could probably fit a hundred or so Skiffs inside it! They speeded towards it to attempt a strafing run and check out these shield generators that the Dnyarri spoke of, but as they neared closer, the battle platform started releasing several green round projectiles which tracked the Skiff and pursued it with great speed, even to the point that they overtook the Arilou, forcing them to teleport out of harm’s way. Undeterred, the Arilou continued and fired upon the Sa-Matra’s shield generators:

Unfortunately, the Skiff’s usually advantageous auto-min ability for their laser cannon backfired since it focuses its attack directly towards the Sa-Matra itself within the safety of the asteroid shell, as opposed to targeting the shield generators. Nonetheless, the Arilou continued their attack, timing their laser fire during strafing runs so when their alignment would be in congruent with a shield generator and the center of the Sa-Matra. This went on for some time, and the Arilou destroyed one of the shield units, but then the Sa-Matra continued deploying more and more green power balls followed by extremely lethal fiery darts and the Arilou eventually teleported directly in the path of fire and they were destroyed.

This lack of ability to properly lock on to targets obviously meant that the Cruiser Tobermoon was rendered useless for this kind of fight, and wouldn’t you know it? Captain Fwiffo signaled that the StarRunner shouldn’t engage the Sa-Matra due to her rear-firing cannon being compromised from its homing mechanism. Figures.

Since we have a total of 4 Terminators, we went ahead and sent one in, but it spent a majority of its time on the outskirts of the battlefield dealing with the green bobbles that bounced off of its hull, severely curtailing its ability to get closer to the Sa-Matra, plus they had to keep raising their shields to prevent them from racking up the damage. However, the fireballs didn’t bounce but would pass over the ship, inflicting heavy damage even if the shields were down for less than a second, and the Terminators shields did end up down for less than a second, and they were therefore destroyed.

We sent in one of our 3 newly volunteered Pkunk Furys, and it too showed up on the periphery of the fight and the Sa-Matra’s deadly projectiles began their pursuit. This time, however, the Fury could use its tremendous speed to outrun the menace and continue towards the main target. The side-firing weapons of the Fury also proved advantageous, since they could around the Sa-Matra while repeatedly firing their molten pellets upon the shield generators. Things went well for a little while but the fireballs accumulated and could pass past the Sa-Matra’s perimeters, and a few key mistakes meant death for an unresurrected Pkunk, but I knew I had caught on to something. Interesting.

I thought that our Utwig Jugger would have no trouble with the Sa-Matra’s weapons, since I had figured they could blast through the green ones and absorb the fire ones, but it didn’t work out like that. Instead, the green balls still slowed down the Jugger by knocking it off course before they were destroyed by the Utwig’s widespread cannons, but the fireball could sustain its energy through the Jugger’s shield, which meant it could continuously and/or unpredictably remain in contact with the Utwig’s shields and hull, and it became impossible to know when to or not have the shield active and once a long usage of shield power while the fireball temporarily veered off lowered the shield permanently, and it was curtains for the masks.

The Supox has a unique ability to fly circles around the Sa-Matra while keeping their cannon firing upon the shield generators, but it was extremely short-lived, due to the inadequate speed to keep away from the fireballs flying at them like Androsynth Guardians in Blazer form! Another Terminator was sent, which did destroy another shield generator, but it was also destroyed fairly quickly.

Back to another Pkunk, I gave the orders for them to remain vigilant of all incoming projectiles but remain focused on fly-bys. Lots of Pkunk profanity was dropped for the next several minutes but after sweeping side-cannon volleys, eventually ALL of the remaining shield generators were destroyed, and suddenly their main force screen was gone! Yes!!

It was as if their predictions had come true, which brought me all the way back to when I had asked them, “I’ve always wanted my fortune told. Would you mind?” and they responded with “Let me call upon the spirits of light. Spirits of Light! Hellooo! Spirits!! Ah yes, I feel them approaching. Spirits of Liiiight, what is in store for this strange but not altogether unpleasing alien creature? The Spirits now speak through me - I gaze with a strange intensity. Ohhhhmmmmm. You will have a greaaat baaattllllle. You will almost be destroyyyyed, but because you made friends with a certain birdlike race, they will come to help you at the last minuuuute. Ah, the trance is past.”

I knew at that moment this was all destined to be indeed, but more importantly, this was our one opportunity… only one shot! – to execute the plan to maneuver the Vindicator into the jaws of death and detonate the massive crystalline bomb structure sitting in my backseat. We set course for the Sa-Matra. Alas, all of the fireballs converged on our position and we were quickly destroyed by the terrible Sa-Matra fireballs. Oh, and by the way, the time machine had to be removed back at Starbase to fit all of the bomb crap so I died for real.

That's a bummer...I guess you'll just have to start over and show us how quickly you can finish a speedrun. :-P

Damn, soo close.....

But this end made me smile and laugh out loud.
So careful, so precise in your works, and you forgot the defensive weapons were still flying around?

Captain. One would likely find it extremely difficult to write logbook entries post-mortem. Please stop beating around the bush and present the actual conclusion to your report. Thank you.

(This is absolutely a mistake that nearly everyone makes once, I know I did. Remember, just because the escape unit was stripped out of your flagship, doesn't mean your escorts don't still have theirs.)

I know I did not. But I fought it with Avatars, and they're pretty good in taking out the defensive weapons, thanks to the satellites.

But anyway, the Chmmr have stolen your precious time device when they installed their crystalline boosters, and you never checked?

They are the real antagonists here!

(also, I think the Captain is waiting for page 150 of this thread for the positive conclusion....)
