Captain’s Log – Apr 21, 2158 – Sa-Matra – Red Alert
Dnyarri – “Okay, human, you’ve made it past the Sa-Matra’s
…and now you can attack the vessel itself, so listen
The Sa-Matra is protected by a thick shell of fused
asteroids reinforced with a weak stasis field.
You will never break through that.
The only opening through the asteroid shield is
covered with a powerful force screen.
One touch of that screen, and you’re history,
To destroy the Sa-Matra, you will have to destroy
the shield generators embedded in the asteroid shell.
To drop the force screen, you will have to destroy
all eight of them.
When the screen is down, bring in your flagship,
move into the asteroid shell…
…and then press the Big Red Button on your
…that starts the detonation sequence.
Your escape pod will eject automatically. Just hope
you’re far enough away before that ship blows.
Ok, human, this is it! The last battle, your final
moment of triumph!
Don’t screw up.
And in case you’re wondering, I’m not going with you,
Captain. I’m staying on board.
Why, you ask?
BECAUSE I’M LOCKED IN HERE YOU IDIOT!
GET ME OUT!! HELP!!! HELP!!!”
Like before, we sent in the Arilou Skiff to scout out the competition. Unlike their scouting mission with the Ur-Quan though, this was going to be a one-trip mission. The Skiff warped in from a long distance from the mighty Sa-Matra, but it gave the little green guys a chance to survey the landscape and see the Sa-Matra for what it is… and what it is IS truly intimidating indeed! Its massive size could probably fit a hundred or so Skiffs inside it! They speeded towards it to attempt a strafing run and check out these shield generators that the Dnyarri spoke of, but as they neared closer, the battle platform started releasing several green round projectiles which tracked the Skiff and pursued it with great speed, even to the point that they overtook the Arilou, forcing them to teleport out of harm’s way. Undeterred, the Arilou continued and fired upon the Sa-Matra’s shield generators:
Unfortunately, the Skiff’s usually advantageous auto-min ability for their laser cannon backfired since it focuses its attack directly towards the Sa-Matra itself within the safety of the asteroid shell, as opposed to targeting the shield generators. Nonetheless, the Arilou continued their attack, timing their laser fire during strafing runs so when their alignment would be in congruent with a shield generator and the center of the Sa-Matra. This went on for some time, and the Arilou destroyed one of the shield units, but then the Sa-Matra continued deploying more and more green power balls followed by extremely lethal fiery darts and the Arilou eventually teleported directly in the path of fire and they were destroyed.
This lack of ability to properly lock on to targets obviously meant that the Cruiser Tobermoon was rendered useless for this kind of fight, and wouldn’t you know it? Captain Fwiffo signaled that the StarRunner shouldn’t engage the Sa-Matra due to her rear-firing cannon being compromised from its homing mechanism. Figures.
Since we have a total of 4 Terminators, we went ahead and sent one in, but it spent a majority of its time on the outskirts of the battlefield dealing with the green bobbles that bounced off of its hull, severely curtailing its ability to get closer to the Sa-Matra, plus they had to keep raising their shields to prevent them from racking up the damage. However, the fireballs didn’t bounce but would pass over the ship, inflicting heavy damage even if the shields were down for less than a second, and the Terminators shields did end up down for less than a second, and they were therefore destroyed.
We sent in one of our 3 newly volunteered Pkunk Furys, and it too showed up on the periphery of the fight and the Sa-Matra’s deadly projectiles began their pursuit. This time, however, the Fury could use its tremendous speed to outrun the menace and continue towards the main target. The side-firing weapons of the Fury also proved advantageous, since they could around the Sa-Matra while repeatedly firing their molten pellets upon the shield generators. Things went well for a little while but the fireballs accumulated and could pass past the Sa-Matra’s perimeters, and a few key mistakes meant death for an unresurrected Pkunk, but I knew I had caught on to something. Interesting.
I thought that our Utwig Jugger would have no trouble with the Sa-Matra’s weapons, since I had figured they could blast through the green ones and absorb the fire ones, but it didn’t work out like that. Instead, the green balls still slowed down the Jugger by knocking it off course before they were destroyed by the Utwig’s widespread cannons, but the fireball could sustain its energy through the Jugger’s shield, which meant it could continuously and/or unpredictably remain in contact with the Utwig’s shields and hull, and it became impossible to know when to or not have the shield active and once a long usage of shield power while the fireball temporarily veered off lowered the shield permanently, and it was curtains for the masks.
The Supox has a unique ability to fly circles around the Sa-Matra while keeping their cannon firing upon the shield generators, but it was extremely short-lived, due to the inadequate speed to keep away from the fireballs flying at them like Androsynth Guardians in Blazer form! Another Terminator was sent, which did destroy another shield generator, but it was also destroyed fairly quickly.
Back to another Pkunk, I gave the orders for them to remain vigilant of all incoming projectiles but remain focused on fly-bys. Lots of Pkunk profanity was dropped for the next several minutes but after sweeping side-cannon volleys, eventually ALL of the remaining shield generators were destroyed, and suddenly their main force screen was gone! Yes!!
It was as if their predictions had come true, which brought me all the way back to when I had asked them, “I’ve always wanted my fortune told. Would you mind?” and they responded with “Let me call upon the spirits of light. Spirits of Light! Hellooo! Spirits!! Ah yes, I feel them approaching. Spirits of Liiiight, what is in store for this strange but not altogether unpleasing alien creature? The Spirits now speak through me - I gaze with a strange intensity. Ohhhhmmmmm. You will have a greaaat baaattllllle. You will almost be destroyyyyed, but because you made friends with a certain birdlike race, they will come to help you at the last minuuuute. Ah, the trance is past.”
I knew at that moment this was all destined to be indeed, but more importantly, this was our one opportunity… only one shot! – to execute the plan to maneuver the Vindicator into the jaws of death and detonate the massive crystalline bomb structure sitting in my backseat. We set course for the Sa-Matra. Alas, all of the fireballs converged on our position and we were quickly destroyed by the terrible Sa-Matra fireballs. Oh, and by the way, the time machine had to be removed back at Starbase to fit all of the bomb crap so I died for real.
