As Maloo Oture and Alvarin are giving some subtle hints to the importance of alien communication, it would appear that my preconceived notion that solving the mysteries of the game and advancing further in the open-ended storyline depends highly on the ability to obtain information from alien species.

This would also indicate the necessity of putting a premium on establishing peaceful contact whenever possible, but I also don't dismiss the possibility of obtaining information from species less than friendly by other means, whether it be by negotiations, manipulation, bullying, or any other forms of coercion I can think of. This of course while using a code of ethics (*cough* ahem) and only resorting to more forceful actions when diplomacy and all other options have failed.

I also mantain the mindset that it's vital to remember that when first contacting an alien species that there is long list of unknowns: You're probably trespassing in their space, you don't yet understand their culture, language, history, language, religion, overall personality, and many other numerous quirks and notions as to whatever agenda and outlook that species may have. If I'm able to establish peaceful relations, I plan on spending time in that alien's space learning as much as possible about them while taking care to not offend them or overstay my welcome.

Everything I mentioned is probably already common knowledge, I just like citing my personal approach to the game and how I enjoy "putting myself" into the captain's chair which allows me to truly embrace the adventure.

All the while constantly telling myself to resist the urge to explore stuff about Star Control!

It's funny, I really enjoy playing the high-action modern video games like GTA or CoD to name a couple (and not draw people into off-topic bunny trails!), but there's always been a special place in my little retro-loving heart for games like Star Control! And now that I've discovered this UQM, which has a vast region of space just begging to be explored by yours truly, I'm really getting stoked!

I also just now figured out how to respond with somebody's quote! I'm so technologically impaired!

Oh, and by the way, I would also recommend getting more than one "slot" with storage, at least in the early game, for the sake of fuel efficiency. The more you can bring back in one go, the less fuel you have to spend getting to the places you are going to mine, as you won't need to go back and forth as many times. Just a suggestion.

Very well, I will first evaluate the Vindicator and its capabilites to make sure I don't need to focus more of my attention to propulsion or defenses, and considering my lack of experience and knowledge of this seemingly underpowered tank, it may be warranted to direct every available resource to ensure I can either outgun, out-maneuver or outrun (probably the latter!) whatever unknowns await for me outside of Sol.

Nevertheless, I should be able to scrape enough together to add additional pods for fuel and cargo storage. Upon leaving starbase I will first explore our own solar system for any valuable minerals, and maybe then return to Starbase and get an extra slot filled.

Does adding things to the Vindicator affect its performance? For example, does adding another weapon or having an abundant amount of minerals have a "drag" affect on the ship affecting its acceleration, turn rate, or overall top speed?

The only things that affect the Vindicator's speed are how many thrusters and turning jets you have.

I find that I prefer being able to outrun hostiles, rather than being forced to engage them. But it all boils down to your play style. And no, there's nothing that will slow your ship down. Nothing outside of battles with a specific enemy, anyway.

Thanks Dyandod and Maloo Oture, it's good to know that ship performance can only be affected positively by additions and upgrades. I've played a few space games where adding things like hull armor or taking on heavy cargo would weigh the ship down, negatively affecting it which was very detrimental during combat.

I also assume that the ship Maloo Oture is referring to is the Vux Intuder, whose limpet parasites will drastically slow a ship down and could only be removed after a battle. I remember when I'd play as the Hierarchy in Star Control 1 how fun it was to completely cover a ship with limpets until it was almost completely green! Good times. I've always wondered though, how is it the Vux can dispense endless amounts of these biological organisms and never run out? Hmmm...

As far as game style goes, I think it would be in my best interest to consider, at least during my early exploration efforts, speed over firepower. I have no idea what's out there and I'd rather be able to turn tail and run versus being unable to flee and forced to fight with a sluggish tank that could be picked apart by a quick ship. However, I usually prefer to make upgrades evenly across the board, so if my first mining expeditons go well I'll upgrade weapons after I feel my engine speed is sufficient.

My standard non-spoiler advice:

1) it is totally not cheating to use the map that came with the game, with a few 'unknown' circles on it. This is the state of their knowledge at the beginning of the game.

2) Listen to Hayes - not just the stuff he throws at you, but also information about the base and his general advice. He's not 100% accurate, but close enough.

3) pay attention to the fuel cost to land on a planet, and the worth of the materials you can collect; do not confuse corrosive (red, worth 2) with radioactive (orange, worth 8), or white (common, worth 1) with gray (metal, worth 3).

4) If you're good at SC1, you will probably get good mileage out of your escort vessels.

5) Taking things apart in the shipyard yields 100% of their construction value.

6) stop preparing, and start playing.

Much appreciated Death 999. Here's my thoughts:

1. I was able to find a replica of the original map that also has the circles you mentioned. I'm planning on adding the species names when I discover their "sphere of influence".

2. My first encounter with Commander Hayes is basically when I decided this was the game for me, but at the same time I also realized that maybe I should change my approach to the game since it seems more involved rather than a typical "shoot-em-up" space game.

3. I'm also going to chart mineral density for future reference to bypass any planets (or entire solar systems) with less than ideal deposits. This is assuming that the concentration of minerals on planets is static and won't change upon beginning a new game.

4. If only! My reflexes aren't what they once were, but I'm a descent strategist and I've been practicing on Super Melee to freshen up on SC1 ships and get used to the new ones. I'm not even sure which ones are potential allies or foes, though some simple observations of the crew windows could allow one to make speculations, but looks can be deceiving, so I'll refrain from making any premature judgements.

5. That's nice to know!

6. Was this perhaps a nice way of wrapping up your thoughts while giving a gentle nudge out of the proverbial nest? Or maybe it's more like, "Shut up and play the damn game already!". I jest and either way, message received, and also along with my apologies for what may seem like procrastination, but I assure you my delay has its reasons. During one of my moments of retro-gaming nostalgia, I downloaded a game (not Star Control) that unfortunately had a virus and has left my home computer in disarray. It's just as well, since I've been saving up to buy a new computer along with a new capture device. Perhaps I should add some top-notch security software to the list. That's also why there's the aforementioned "practicing on Super Melee", which I can get away with at work during slow times but I have no desire to attempt the full game there, but admittedly I've gone through some of the beginning sequences since I'm quite anxious the get started. Anyway, I'll hopefully have my new computer probably within a few days.
