You're going to give him a complex, Krulle. Just let him deal with the situation.

I'm sure he will deal with it.
The way he always does, by going down every possibility of the conversation trees to find out anything he may uncover.
Then selecting his most favourite outcome and going back in time to the particular timestamp he desires as favourite outcome.

I've already my next poke, but then I saw his fleet configuration...

Last defensive line Alpha Tucanae...

It's all good. I've quickly learned it's probably best to place krulle's quips through my bullsh-- I mean, my "skepticism" filter. Besides, perhaps all of the pranks and antics will help prepare me for one of my next destinations, but that's for another time and place. But for now...

(The Trog Log continues...)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Captain’s Log - Supplemental:

We knew we had a big fight on our hands, and speaking of which, it was all hands to battle stations! Sending in any other ship than the Vindicator seemed out of the question. Our cruisers would get torn to shreds... literally. The Pkunk wouldn’t be able to get close enough to attack with their short-range molten pellet cannons before a fiery ring of plasma death would fry their feathers. The Spathi’s weapons do such miniscule amounts of damage that it would take a good while before they could defeat the Marauder, at which point their crew would probably be down by half -- not to mention the ptsd problems I’d be left dealing with afterwards. The Orz wouldn’t be able to effectively attack the Kohr-Ah head-on with their howitzer cannon alone, so they’d need to deploy space marines to achieve victory, but because of the Marauder’s massive crew, they would suffer many casualties in the process. And the Zoq-Fot-Pik would...uh, well, since an entire planetary brigade was either obliterated or sent into hiding from a single Kohr-Ah ship, this adequately displays my level of confidence (or the lack thereof) of a Stinger taking them on.

So yes, it had to be the Vindicator. But that of course didn’t mean it was going to be a cake walk; our point-defense laser is practically useless against their spinning blade projectiles, and we could also be in imminent danger if we charged in too fast because of the plasma ring defenses, but too much hesitation would give the Kohr-Ah enough time to continuously dish out blades, which also begin forming a minefield the longer the battle continues. The only effective strategy that seemed plausible was to let the hellbores perform double duty: If we could line up our firing direction to coincide with the deployment of their blades, our salvo’s blast should absorb their attack and continue towards their target. So we sent in our flagship...

“Treade a worme on the tayle, and it must turne agayne.” – John Heywood, 1546

Our strategy didn’t work to perfection during the first several attempts, but we finally managed to position ourselves at an advantageous position and we pulverized the Kohr-Ah vessel with a heaping-helping of hellbore destruction!

The Zoq-Fot-Pik leaders were ever-so grateful that we had come to their rescue and destroyed the intruder that had been bombarding their homeworld for the past few days, and although their planetary shielding had protected most of their cities, large sections of their unprotected jungles and forests weren’t so fortunate, and much of their wildlife payed the price as a result.

The leaders also realized that if more Kohr-ah had showed up, there was no way they would’ve been able to offer much resistance, so they’ve deferred to us in matters of war. I feel they should probably try to remain under the radar as best as possible to prevent more incursions, and they offered us four of the Stinger ships to express their gratitude, but our fleet could only accept two, bringing our Stinger total to four. Nice!

Now that the immediate Kohr-Ah threat has been eliminated, we can reconvene and decide where we’d like to go next. Captain out.

Eh, what?
No return to a set timesave at the last StarBase, sell two ZFP stingers and return here to cash the full load of four?

Eh....

Also, do you really want Stingers whose captains have apparently been hiding instead of defending the sole planet and thus the whole species???

Your choice... ;)

(yes, I'm full of BS, but I can't direct all of that towards my kids yet, so I have to uload it here... Sorry.
And thanks for this very entertaining report of your game!)

At this point, what would he buy with the extra RUs? The only thing left is fuel, or perhaps new escorts as they become available, since he hasn't lost a crew member since Pluto and he's already flying a topped off warship.

Yeah, but this is Troglodyte we're talking about; I'm pretty sure he's already planning to do it all over again just for the two other free ZFP ships, even if he can't do anything with them. (In the interest of efficiency, of course!) :)

Yeah, about that... I don't think I'm going to redo a 25 day trip just to gain an extra 1254 RUs. Remember krulle?... I'm single-handedly running the entire Zelnick empire economy... and stocks are up! Way up!

And don't worry about those Stinger captains... if I could prepare a handful of spineless Spathi and forge them into the "mussels with muscles" they have become, ready and willing to serve and die for the Alliance if necessary (albeit temporarily) than I expect I should be able to handle whipping a few Zoqs, Fots and Piks into combat readiness. ;)

(Meanwhile...)

Captain’s Log - Mar 14, 2157 - Alpha Tucanae I - Yellow Alert

We are ready to leave orbit and continue with our mission. One of our next main objectives will be sending us out into the direction of Columba, Chandrasekhar, and Circinus... the three “C’s” constellation cluster if you will. Our navigator reports that it would use 34.1 units of fuel to reach Alpha Columbae, and since we usually travel using approximately 2 units of fuel for each day traversed, it would not be until around the beginning of April until we could be expected to arrive if we left immediately. Our main purpose for wanting to explore that region in the first place is to contact the Arilou, but the prospect of discovering a wormhole or a gate into another dimension is also on our top list of curiosities.

However, since the opening doesn’t reveal itself until the 17th of each month, we’d be approximately a week or so too early, so that should give us a little time to stop by Orionis and try to make contact with the Umgah. Although the Umgah are part of the Ur-Quan Hierarchy and may attack our ship and fleet, I’m hoping we can possibly learn some valuable information from them and, if worse comes to worse, we should be able to handle their Drone ships in battle if need-be.

I’ve gone over all the information we’ve gathered concerning the Umgah, and even though it’s just bits and pieces, here’s what we know so far:

According to Hayes, the Umgah were conquered very early on during the War, even before the Ilwrath, but since the Ur-Quan had entered this region coming from the direction of Ophiuchus, it makes sense they would’ve been an early target.

“It’s unfortunate that the Umgah fell to the Ur-Quan so early in the War, because I suspect we would have gotten along well with those big blob creatures; at the very least it would have been entertaining. We know them a bit better than most races, because they were eager to talk with our ships before, after, and during battle. The Arilou intimated that they had a relationship with the Umgah before the Ur-Quan arrived, but I don’t know any details.” - Commander Hayes

The Pkunk are being attacked by the Ilwrath, and even though they are slightly suspicious of an unknown culprit, they are still unaware (and therefore never mention by name) that the Umgah are responsible for the Ilwrath’s deplorable actions, as presented by the Melnorme:

“The Ilwrath are presently attacking the Pkunk in the Lacaille and Krueger constellations. These beings have slavish devotion to their dark gods Dogar and Kazon, which in the past few years has been used against them by the Umgah. If you need to manipulate the Ilwrath, we suggest you discover the Umgah’s technique and duplicate it.” – Melnorme

The Umgah’s notion for what are appropriate practical jokes is definitely up for debate, and this far exceeds throwing a bag of burning poop on somebody’s front porch! Think about how many Pkunk have died meaninglessly because of the Umgah’s cruel hoax!! Furthermore, according to the Melnorme, the Umgah’s manipulation of the Ilwrath caused the people to turn on the skeptical priest caste who didn’t give enough credence to the direction given by “Dogar and Kazon”, killing and replacing them with more malleable religious leaders; leaders who would be more inclined to listen and obey the “god’s” broadcasts.

We have spent much time speaking with other aliens and various species, including the Orz, VUX, Yehat, Mycon, and the Syreen, but it wasn’t until we made it all the way out into Spathi space and spoke with them that the Umgah get mentioned again, and it would seem that the Spathi have been prime targets of the blob’s lunacy.

They told us how they quickly surrendered to the Ur-Quan, and they were in fact pleased when they learned one of the options given to them was to be forever encased in an impenetrable shield on their home planet, thus ensuring that the evils of the galaxy (including the “Ultimate Evil”) would not be able to get at them. Unfortunately, the Umgah had other ideas and switched the Spathi’s choice, forcing them to become battle thralls instead! They also used their ’Caster to make the Spathi believe they were coming under attack from various monsters and such before the Spathi discovered their trickery and took the ’Caster from them:

“I guess the only event of importance I know about concerns the low and stupid Umgah, whose pranks we must suffer on a regular basis. At least we have removed one source of their annoying jokes -- an unusually strong HypwerWave ’Caster, which they used on several occasions to impersonate such frightening characters as the Grand Master Planet Eaters, Jud the Ineffable Vug, and Killmaster 18. Needless to say, we did not fall for any of their high jinks. In fact, we succeeded in taking from the Umgah their precious ’Caster, thus ending their attempts at sick levity.” - Spathi

After the Spathi reverse-engineered the Ur-Quan slave shield technology and created their own personal planetary prison, they decided to leave behind the Umgah ’Caster for us to discover on their moon. After we returned to Starbase, the scientists there at Starbase confirmed our HyperWave ’Caster was most likely built by the Umgah:

“The analysis reads as follows:
SUBJECT: HyperWave Broadcaster - Umgah Design.
DATA: This unit is capable of generating extremely intense HyperWave transmissions... though it is otherwise similar to our own ’Casters
SUMMARY: This thing would be great for practical jokes. You could scream ‘Boo!’ from an Oort Cloud... and scare the pants, or whatever, off everyone in the system. If you used it in HyperSpace, there's no telling who might hear you and come running.”
- Commander Hayes

We learned that the ’Caster is indeed a very powerful device; not only can it be used to beckon the Melnorme to drop in for a visit like some kind of roadside-- uh, I mean spaceside assistance, but it also penetrated the slave shield over Procyon II so we could communicate with the ‘Mmrch’ on the surface. I certainly hope the Umgah won’t be able to detect their former megaphone and want it returned, but either way... they can’t have it back!

There’s not much else we have on the Umgah, except for one last mentioning by the ZFP, who may be detecting something from Orionis:

“We may not have told you this before, Captain, but my species is somewhat sensitive to certain meta-psychic vibrations. [...] Our most talented Seers have detected some ominous and powerful meta-psychic signals from the direction of the Orionis constellation.”

I’m going to assume for the moment that the Pik’s assessment of accusing the Zoq of being “fakers” is unwarranted, but I’m not sure if the Zoq Seers are detecting the Umgah themselves… or perhaps something else. Curious.

We are planning to travel upspin of Capricornus (since we’ve already explored that constellation) on towards Zeta Normae and from there we can begin our search throughout Umgah space, hopefully finding their homeworld or any other locations of special interest, but we’ll also have to keep an eye on our bird friends below while they continue their migration towards Serpens. Captain out.

Urgh. Thanks for reminding me of one of the most poorly conceived parts of an altogether poor quality experience.
