This can’t be legal, can it?

Post by Matthias »

I don’t seem to be getting my activation email on the UQM forums, so I couldn’t let them know or even check to see if they already know about it. If this is an issue and they don’t know about it yet, please someone let them know.

So this can’t be legal right?

It's not, but it is not the first time this happened.
If someone is dumb enough to pay for a hardcopy of a game that's for free to download, then they get what they deserve.
A quick online search should give everyone the information they need to find out this sale is a scam.

I cannot report this item, since I don't have an ebay account anymore.

Most interesstingly, they claim only the installer and the screenshots to be GNU-GPL protected, and the rest is "our protected IP".

Kind of reported it, problem is the report form itself is bugged, so I sent the complaint to the Customer Service.
Greetings!
I intended to report an Item that is being distributed by non copyright holder.
There is a problem with reporting form, as it does not display the drop-down menu for "Report Category", so can not continue.

The item in question is:
GIFT ITEM - The Ur-Quan Masters - Fan Edition Star Control 2 Type PC MAC Game
Item no: 123752048451
Seller: mtsoftwaresolutions

The game source is community managed and the assets are copyright of ToysForBob (Fred Ford and Paul Reiche the third).
As such this distribution with copyright ownership by the seller is fraudulent.
Regards, **my credentials**

Well that's fancy. I did a quick google search. Looks like the only thing MT Software Solution sells is other people's software.
They must have a loophole or some form of anonymity. I guess the internet is the new "back of a random van".

Got a non-resolution reply. "clear cookies and cache, sign in." No reference to actual complaint.
Upon deeper reading the reporting page, it turns out only the IP owner can report IP infringement and only through dedicated system.
As a member of general public I can not dispute this item.
This sucks.

Okay, but isn't this project under GPL? My understanding is that the IP "owner" (unless explicitly defined) is the person who wrote their part of the code.
If I'm correct on that, then any person who wrote code for the UQM project can lodge a complaint.

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer (should be obvious).
