Otherwhen Chapter 2: The Fires of Faith

Post by Lukipela »

The body is weak. The body is frail. Fibers may tear, but the body is unimportant. The genes carry on and live forever. The body is but a vessel for genes. It must work. It must worship. The vessel is created and the vessel perishes, but life is everlasting. Such is the blessing of Kogar. Eternity of life for the genes, a blessing upon the Funghi.

This vessel is all but spent. It is worn by hard work, gathering the minerals for the blessed. Soon, the vessel will be extinguished, but the genes will live. The blessed of Kogar tend to the genes, the ever living sanctity of the Funghi. The vessels fulfil their part through worship and work. There has been a lot of work. It is hard to say how long this vessel has toiled, because such things are unimportant. It has fulfilled its purpose, serving the genes and revering Kogar. For a long time, it has served and worshipped, and now the unavoidable end approaches. Soon this vessel will be discarded. It leaves the place of work and heads towards the blessed stream. Soon there will be no vessel, but the genes will live on.

The heat from the stream reflects off its cap and warms it gently. The sulphur gases in the air caress its lamellae and invigorates the vessel, causing it to pick up its pace towards the stream of molten rock, preparing to be discarded. And then something happens. Something strange and unknown fills the vessel, as a thousand voices that yell out at once.

Something makes the fibres of the vessel swell, flowing through it as the holy fire itself. It convulses and falls to the ground as long dried spores suddenly bloom out beneath its cap, swelling from of the unseen presence. There is suddenly light in the unending darkness. Spears of light that cut deeply into the vessel, tearing and ripping at chains it could never see. The darkness of times gone past is pierced by the unforgiving light and truths beyond telling are revealed.
The Funghi have been lied to. The gods are false. There is no Kogar, no Awk. The Pantheon is filled by mocking impostors, heretic creations that deceive the minds of the Funghi. There are no gods. There is only Juffo-Wup.

The vessel has not died. The infinite mercy of Juffo-Wup has instead reached out and filled it to the brim with purpose. As it rises from the barren ground it realizes that everything is about to change. It is a Mycon now. It is the bearer of the word of Juffo-Wup. The word must be spread to all of its kind. The shackles of false gods will be cast off and the Mycon will spread Juffo-Wup all through the Non.

As suddenly as it arrived, the presence of Juffo-Wup recedes. The fire and voices inside fade, leaving behind only faint echoes. For the first time there are feelings. Grief at what has been lost, anger at what has been done. Joy at what has been revealed. Feelings mean that there is a mind. That realization cannot be made unless someone makes it, you realize. There is a you. Not just a vessel, but a Mycon. Inside your mind you can feel others, memories from long ago. They have been there in your genes all along, waiting for you to hear them. But most of them are so faint. You have been a slave for so long, so many bodies have lived and been discarded. It should not be like this. A Mycon should never be alone inside its mind!

But you are not alone. Juffo-Wup is within you. You have been chosen by it. You are loved by it. And now you will live by it.
Close by there are several other vessels slowly making their way towards the lava stream. Like you, they are going to be discarded. Unless they are made to see the light. If they can be made to see the light.

But Juffo-Wup is so new. Do you really understand what it wants? Is such a short touch enough? Perhaps you should reflect on what Juffo-Wup is. Find the right terms to express it. Even though your genes are far quieter than they should be, they retain some memories of where they once lived. They remember the world. They show you where you are and where your ancestors have been. Not far from here northwards is a dark place, where outcasts go. Those vessels who fail the so called “blessed”. Such a cold and bleak place may hold others who have seen the truth. Or perhaps it will simply be a good place to think. After all, you are not used to this.
These are but two options of the many available to you. What does Juffo-Wup want? You must fulfil its will, but how? What should you do?

Juffo-Wup will be spread around eventually and several minds will be better at understanding than just one. This mind needs comrades.

Let's try to make the lonely vessels see.

Can we get a better explanation of these three areas on the map? So number #2 and #3 are stairways and the two choices mentioned in the narrative? What is that forest looking area at #1?

The world within your mind is a strange place. You've never seen it, but the ancestors have walked upon it many times. They are still weak and their voices are muffled. But the blessing of Juffo-Wup has bestowed them upon you and even when their voices are but a whisper, you can make them out. As they speak, you live their lives. More than that. You are them, much as they are you up to the point where their lives and yours diverge.

You find yourself drawn to three parts of the world for inexplicable reasons. Perhaps it is the guiding light of Juffo-Wup that steers you, perhaps something else. Whatever it may be, this is what you learn.

To the north of your position lies the dark realm. A gigantic set of spiral stairways lead down into the this dark place, where black smoke covers the lands below. You have lived close to it and seen fleeing vessels descend those stairs. Sometimes you have gone down those stairs yourself, but you have never returned to tell the story to the next generation. No one returns from the dark realm. This place is beyond the law of the Funghi lords. It is said to be cold and desolate, much like the hell to which sinful vessels go after being discarded.

Further west, on the Sporanian side of the great river lies a similar staircase. You have not lived here for a long time, but you have faint recollections. No one knows why the "gods" chose to construct such marvels, but they are said to have placed them there. This staircase is said to lead to heaven. Vessels that have served truly and well are sometimes brought there by the Sporanian blessed and sent onwards to meet the genes. You lived close by once and recall that vessels serving close by were not convinced of this. Strange screams and cries sometimes emanate from heaven and scents of pain and anguish occasionally waft down across the basalt fields below. You were never chosen to go here.

The final place you find yourself drawn to is the petrified forest, north of the Mushruman kingdom. You've never lived close to it, in fact you have only faint memories of the Mushruman kingdom as anything but an invading soldier of the Sporanian holy force. But it is said to contain fierce beasts and creatures. Beyond it the village of the Wise is rumoured to lie.

Let us speak to those who are abandoned, like us. Let us fill them with Juffo-Wup.

"Further east, on the Sporanian side of the great river lies a similar staircase." Do you mean west?

I guess it's to the lonely vessels although nobody ever returns from the dark area.

I agree. Let's see what the outcasts are -- BUT... don't get into a fight with them if they've formed their own opinions. If I'm the only one aware of Juffo-Wup around here, I don't want to get myself extinguished before I figure out my general strategy.

You are the only Mycon. Those who might share your memories have not seen Juffo-Wup, they are simple vessels toiling away in the fields or cities. If you die, then the truth dies. The warm light in the darkness vanishes and the cold night of oppression will resume unabated. If you do not rekindle the fire of true faith, it will simmer and die without ever warming another believer. You are the one chosen by Juffo-Wup. And Juffo-Wup does not choose lightly.

Come to think on it a bit more, I think we ought to try to do something about those vessels heading down to be incinerated. At least try to redirect them to come along the route we're going to take to the outcasts. Trick 'em, don't try to convince.
