Re: Ur-Quan Masters HD mod

Why do all that work all over again if you're going to get the same game, though? C is not a deprecated language or anything like that. UQM will still be compilable for the foreseeable future, and the source code is available under the GNU GPL. There is no reason whatsoever to not use it. I would un...

Re: Ur-Quan Masters HD mod

Rewriting the whole engine from scratch would almost certainly be much more difficult than integrating the HD code into mainline UQM.

Re: Ur-Quan Masters HD mod

What really needs to happen is the HD code needs to get integrated into mainline UQM. Probably it should be set up in such a way that the original sprites are still used for collisions, so that there aren't any compatibility problems with net games.

Re: The Orz Nemesis

The Orz is quite effective against a wide range of ships, many of them quite expensive, in PvP. The only problem it has is the Androsynth is so cheap that pretty much any fleet is going to have it, and any remotely competent player can easily beat even the most skilled Orz player with an Androsynth....

Re: Funny thing about the Melnorme Probe...

I think you're taking this discussion a bit too seriously. I don't know if it's the case, but the way you're writing, you look as though you're offended. It's just a game. A very fun game, but still just a game. (Which I also don't think they do, because I see them as barterers rather then capitalis...

Re: Funny thing about the Melnorme Probe...

I think the main problem you have with my idea is that you think the Melnorme are 'the good side of capitalism.' No. The problem I see in your idea is you're assuming that everything the writers did must have a purpose. I'm looking at this from the perspective of what the writers must have been thi...

Re: Funny thing about the Melnorme Probe...

Suggesting very strongly that the Melnorme aren't above cheating a particularly naive customer a little. I seriously doubt that was FF&PR's intention. The Melnorme are a representation of the good side of capitalism. Swindling is what the Druuge are supposed to do. Realistically, if the Melnorme we...

Re: Funny thing about the Melnorme Probe...

Well if you're writing the story you think about it. Not necessarily. If it's not a particularly important thing, or if it's something most people won't understand anyway, you might just go with some smart-sounding nonsense. How could an exploration probe build by an advanced race malfunction? If i...

Re: Funny thing about the Melnorme Probe...

Honestly, I don't think FF&PR really thought about the probe behavior much, because the program as described by the Slylandro just doesn't make any sense. There's no check to make sure that the current "target" makes sense, or anything to make sure that all behaviors happen; it just goes to the high...

Re: Women on this board

Regarding risk, I think you are tripping yourself up on the fact that whether or not a consequence is negative or not is not an absolute but defined. That's the difference between my examples. If you don't want to cut your hand and consider this a negative consequence, then it is a risk regardless ...
