Re: In the present day and time, are Syreen still acceptable
I was talking about the Syreen as a species, not the character Talana and her tryst with the captain. The problem is unlike say Fwiffo or Admiral ZEX, Talana doesn't really underline anything about the species as a whole (e.g. in contrast, by having some measure of heroism or liking humans) that str...

Re: In the present day and time, are Syreen still acceptable
So, card-carrying social justice warrior here, but I think removing the only explicitly female-coded species/character you can directly speak to (if I remember correctly) in the original game would be the wrong way to go. The way the Syreen were portrayed was always pretty tacky frankly -- it's not ...

Re: Sequels strife
It's rather hard to believe the line that Stardock wasn't either pushing to include elements from the old series or putting some kind of pressure on Paul and Fred, if P&F felt their only recourse was legal action. If Stardock really don't want their game to have anything to do with the aliens and un...

Re: What's your usual poison?
A pint of cask ale from the tap served at just under room temperature, but if that isn't handy (say I'm at a dinner party or dear lord forbid some kind of club) a gin and tonic or whiskey sour does me fine. If we're talking drinks that aren't strictly poison, then a black Yorkshire brew with a littl...

Re: Women on this board
There's an easier solution than Persian, The Troglodyte. Just use singular they , it's a well established practice in English and it is rarely ambiguous in context. You used it in your 'cleaned up' gender neutral example but only at the very end: 'they'll reply tomorrow'. But for example 'I was talk...

Re: What are you reading?
To disagree with fossa a bit: of Asimov's books, the Foundation series is probably my favourite. I'd definitely recommend them. I certainly wouldn't discard them on the basis that the part of the premise is a bit out-there. That's kind of the basic appeal of sci-fi after all. Whether you completely ...

Re: Relocation station
I've read that there's still some kind of archive of the old boards? Is it online, and if so, does anyone have a link? I heartily approve of bringing back the old SC-themed board icons (from before the last software switch over). Also, I could probably quickly cobble together some kind of SC-themed ...

Re: What are you reading?
Just finished The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds a few days ago. A pretty excellent standalone hard sci-fi detective story set in Reynolds' Revelation Space universe (a series with a shared continuity and occasionally a few recurring characters, but you can almost jump in anywhere despite the wealth o...

Re: Games other than Star Control
Dwarf Fortress The idea of this game excites me greatly, but the interface is a bit of a nightmare to learn -- well, obviously, I guess, but it's not as if it's just the ASCII graphics per se. I'm fairly acclimatized from playing a lot of roguelikes. I imagine the payoff will probably be worth it o...
